My Actifit Report Card: December 1 2023

Wow what a day, this day will probably be the most steps I ever walk in a day. My mission was to walk the tama river from where I am staying to the ocean which is about 50km.

The tama river runs from the mountains to the see where it ends at Kawasaki and Haneda airport. The headwaters are used to supply much of Tokyo its drinking water and is one of the most famous rivers in Tokyo. Anyway my day started early at 550am by the time i rsached the river. The sun atill not up.

Not long after I started I saw a sign that said 49km left to the ocean.

It was starting to become lighter revealing some industrial activity along the route.

It was already time for breakfast so I quickly detoured off the river course and immediately saw a shrine. Which are scattered throughout Japan.

Not far from here I grabbed a simple breakfast from family mart, a convenience store nearby.

Back to the river and I start seeing milestones every few km, this one says 45km to go.

The sun is now starting to break through the clouds lighting up the bridge in the distance.

Every now and then I get a reminder immin a modern city not just a tranquil village along a river when I see a monorail cross the river.

I'm now almost 10km into the trip and it's only just now I come across a sign outlining the whole route.

Next I come across and old wooden bridge which is still in good working order, and a marvellous bridge to look at too.

Also great to see some ducks nearby

Not long after crossing the old bridge I see a modern skyline of a suburb of Tokyo, again reminder of the modern metropolis I'm walking through. As I get further downstream the bridges are getting bigger and grander.

There is even an amusement park visible in the distance.

The river now is much wider, but I realised that's because there is a damn up ahead, more like a weird than a dawn, but the river here is starting to fill the river banks.

The water was flowing heavy and steadily over the weir wall.

Ok now it's time for lunch a quick detour from the river is needed, I come across a mos burger which is a local japanese burger place, if burgers are your thing I'd highly recommend it.

The meal was delicious

Also I was lucky enough to find where Wally. I usually can't find it in the book, but this time I saw him clearly.

I'm now more than halfway and the towns are now becoming cities. I now see a beautiful skyline overlooking the river.

The added bonus was seeing the shinkansen bullet trains crossing the river, they were very frequent.

I was also amazed that some of these buildings had helipads on the top, this was NECs headquarters, I think. Perhaps the president owns a helicopter.

Not long to go now, I see a marker that says 9km left. And by now, my toes are hurting with blisters, so it's time for another stop.

I can now see Kawasaki on the bend if the river, and I start seeing planes take-off in the distance.

As I'm getting further downstream, the sun is now setting.

Now I can see in the distance the
Daishi bashi. Which used to be the last bridge crossing the tama river until recently when a new bridge was built further downstream.
I had to cross the river for the first time because the airport is up ahead and there is no public access so I walked over daishi hashi.

The view of the river spectacular, as its now more like a bay than a river.

Over the river and there is more walking. The planes are now flying directly overhead.

Finally I come to the last bridge called sky Bridge. As you can see it's dark but still had more walking to do. I now couldn't walk along the waters edge but along th roads, where I saw lots of industrial activity and refineries.

Finally I made it to the ocean, atleast as far as its possible to get to.

And this finished a very long day, and 86k steps in total, my personal best probably for life. I'll always remember this day.

What a great adventure! Congratulations on completing both a marathon and an ultra distance hike.
Thanks for documenting and sharing, I will be looking for one of those Mos burgers when I am there. I hope you were able to get a lift home.
