Unfortunate Event While Attending A Free Experience
While I was browsing the web for a gym to sign up, I remembered a facility offering Hot Yoga. They have a free experience for first timers, and because I was curious of it ever since, I decided to register for the free experience yesterday. The gym will have to be for next week. 🤞
This was the only photo I took that day, as I wasn’t allowed to bring my phone during the session.
The facility’s name is Hot Yoga Lava. It’s on the next train station so I decided to do a bit of cardio by walking instead of commuting. It helped to kill time too, because I arrived an hour earlier than the lesson. At first I was confused where the entrance to the building was as it was on the 2nd floor but with a few observations I was able to find the way up. When I reached the facility and introduced my name, they weren’t expecting me at that time yet so they politely asked me to come back 20 minutes later. I asked for the toilet before leaving and they led me to a nice and wide ladies’ room where the toilet was. Not just the toilet but the shower room, the changing room and the lockers were also there. It was so impressive.
I thought after toilet I’d have to kill time in Daiso, the 100yen shop on the first floor but they told me not to leave anymore and just stay as we’ll be doing the procedures and orientation.
They provided everything which was quite helpful for beginners, and incredible for a free experience. They gave me a small bag containing the 2 sets of yoga wear, the bath towel, small towel and a 1L bottle of water. I headed to the locker room to change.
The instructor who was also the staff in charge of me and one other person who came for the experience, gave us a ginger drink in a sachet and told us to take it before the lesson. I hated ginger but I didn’t want to be a nuisance.
I had to leave my phone and my watch in the locker room but I forgot to bring my hair tie. Argh.
The yoga lesson started and it was about upper body yoga. The room was so hot! It’s indeed a hot yoga! So many people there in the room already, and I even saw one man joining the lesson in a room full of young and middle aged women. I was the only plus size woman there though, and I had to sit in the center, in front of the instructor so she could see the first timers.
The lesson was tough for me as I haven’t exercised since forever. The yoga poses were so nice looking on other women, and I couldn’t wait to be like them in the future. Of course I had to give my best in every pose, and the instructor was kind enough to help me. She gave me some tips too if I can’t do a pose.
I was a bit frustrated because my body wasn’t as flexible as other people but I was also enjoying the experience. It was hard for me to sweat but I was sweating in the session. The rest of the people have bigger sweats than mine though. Just amazing.
In the middle of the session, while we were doing a pose similar to lunges, my body gave up. I started feeling dizzy. I really hate lunges, I always start getting dizzy when doing it. I had to stop and go back to the resting position and the instructor noticed me right away. I only said one word as I wasn’t feeling well already. She led me outside to cool down and left me to the other instructors who were attending the front.
They were kind enough to help me as I was about to faint, but good thing I didn’t. But later on I started getting nauseous and I couldn’t hold it anymore, I vomitted. Good thing I still held back and not completely puke on the floor. They gave me a trash bag so I could continue vomiting. 😭
They were really helping me a lot, gave me cooling stuff and all. The instructor came to check on me once in a while and I felt so bad because I was disturbing her class. 😕
After a short while, I felt better. The other instructor who was attending to me adviced me not to go back to the class anymore, and just take a shower instead. I felt really bad for them and even offered to clean up my mess but they insisted on making me rest and shower when I feel a little better.
I took a shower, changed and went back to the front. The instructor asked me what could be the cause, and my overeating hours becore the lesson could be the cause. She also added that maybe my body was shocked because I hadn’t exercised for a long time.
Nevertheless she told me it’s still better to sign up. Before the incident they were offering one or two years courses but since “that” happened, they offered me a 3 month plan. I immediately grabbed it as I really want to do this.
Before leaving, I made a small laugh and the instructors noticed it. They asked me why I laughed. I told them this looks fun. And they were happy with it. Even when that incident had to happen, I am still so positive about this. That’s why I took the big step of registering. Now I’m just excited for what’s to come. And of course I still have that fear that I might get dizzy again so I took a class of a lower level than the class I just joined, as advised by the instructor.
Wish me luck!
If you have some tips for a beginner like me, please let me know in the comments.

There are a few Lava's in my area. I was interested in going a few years ago but missed the opportunity because I was just pregnant with my second son.
And, like you, I haven't exercised in a long time. I've gained weight, my body gets cold, and I know I need to do something about it... Maybe I should try hot yoga sometime. But I might vomit too.
They told me not to eat anything a few hours before going. 😄 Or you can eat light..
I think you won’t vomit like me 😄🤞
They have a free experience campaign this time, so worth trying and see if you’re willing to go for it. Kinda expensive though, but first 2 months are free for the offer I got.
Haha, that's exactly what I wrote in my comment a minute ago. 😅
Wow what an experience! I haven't attended hot yoga classes before. I guess just got to take it slow and always listen to your body. Take care!
Yeah, listen to my body.. That's actually hard for me to do coz sometimes I don't know if I'm being lenient or what..
Yeah listening to the body is important! :)
I love hot yoga classes. Unfortunately, yoga studios disappeared since the pandemic. I'd love to join another one if it would be available again near me.
Don't feel pressure if you get left behind in class. It's fine to just rest and do child's pose and skip the difficult ones.
Hope you get used to the heat soon. :)
I think that's the main reason. I'm not used to the heat. That's why I never liked Philippines' heat anymore hahahahaha
But yes, I'll try to rest and make a child's pose if it gets difficult.
Thank you for the advice!
So in your area, they still haven't recovered? I hope you can get back to yoga soon.
Due to hybrid setup, I hope there would be hot yoga studios that would appear near where I live.
There have been yoga studios that came back, but not the ones offering hot yoga since it needs special equipment hehe.
oh, no! What an experience! 😮 I've done yoga before, but never "hot" yoga, and I dunno if I can handle it. In a too-hot environment, I have trouble breathing. I hope next time you try it, things go better! 💜
I also have trouble breathing at first but I got used to the heat. We didn't start right away, and we just stayed in position for a few minutes so we could get used to the heat.
It's nice to try it, @thekittygirl! Maybe you should give it a go again!
Hello Witty!
I'm sorry to read about this unpleasant experience. It must have been uncomfortable, but you're not alone. I used to watch The Biggest Loser, a weight loss show and saw many go through this experience at the beginning. So you're not alone.
I'm not sure why this happened to you, it could be a number of reasons, like this activity is totally new to you, you were a bit stressed and eating. By eating, I mean it's advised to have a light meal an hour or two before the session. I used to go jogging three times per week (5 - 10km) and I know how important it was to have half empty stomach, with light meals hours before the jogging session. Sometimes I was out at 6am and all I had was a banana and water.
Anyway, please don't give up. Next time will be better and it's going to be easier. I'm really glad you decided to do yoga, as it's really healthy for the body and mind too.
Good luck my dear friend and looking forward to reading about your journey 🤗
omg I just needed your advices! Banana and water - noted! I am actually not so sure what light meals mean so at least now I have an idea. And yes, I decided to continue, even when I'm so shy to come back because of the incident. The instructors there were kind and approachable so even with that unfortunate incident, I feel like we have gotten close. Just to shy to go there again but I made a reservation for my next class! Hopefully it will be better than this time, and I'm more prepared.
Thank you for the kind words and advices @erikah. You're the best!
Mam pagpatuloy mo lang yan don't give up it's for you not for them.
omg much needed motivation. tama nga naman, it’s for me not for other people

take it easy. it is always hard for first timers. the heat could also be the cause.
