A discussion that becomes a need for publication

A few days ago I had a discussion with a sports lover much younger than me. He is a great connoisseur of soccer and baseball, but in other sports he doesn't see much beyond balls and bats. The discussion was based when I invited him to watch a women's World Cup game and in the middle of the game I told him that we had a volleyball team that would play against any of these teams and beat them. He got angry and told me that it was impossible, that Cuba could not have had a team like the one I was telling him and many other things.

Evidently this young man does not know much about the history of our sports movement. It is true that we are not going through the best moment, but the beautiful pages written by our athletes are there and they have to serve as inspiration, to retake the path we have lost. That is the pretext to make this publication and a tribute to the SPECTACULAR MORENAS OF THE CARIBBEAN.

The XIX Women's Volleyball World Championship is taking place these days. The event is being held jointly, between the countries of Holland and Poland. There is a team that is not in this event because its level has dropped a lot, but it is a reference in world volleyball.

It makes me nostalgic not to see the Spectacular Morenas of the Caribbean in an event of this kind, but we are not at their level. That was not always the case. Anyway, I want to tell you something that happened at the World Volleyball Championship in Brazil.....

The record

The year was 1994 and the South American giant was preparing to hold a new edition of the Women's Volleyball World Championship. Cuba was the favorite because of the gold medals won in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and the First Grand Prix held in 1993. Despite the favoritism of the Cuban team, there were other teams from the world elite who came to win the gold medal and others who, in addition to that determination, wanted to get rid of the thorn of Barcelona and demonstrate their strength, as was the case of the host Brazil.

From the beginning of the tournament, the Antillean team showed that it was coming for all the victories and was defeating each of the teams it faced, but there was a particularity in each of the victories achieved and it was the fact of reaching all of them by three sets to zero (3-0). Thus came the final match that put face to face two Latin American teams with an even level of play and a strong temperament. If, on the one hand, Cuba had the condition of favorite, Brazil was a tremendous rival and, in addition, was the host.

The match started with the strength and "claw" of the Cubans and the response of their rivals together with the Brazilian torcida. Despite the effort of the green and gold team and the fans of the host country, nothing prevented Cuba from winning the gold medal and starring in an unprecedented event, something that no team will be able to overcome: winning the gold medal and all the matches without losing a set. In this way, Cuba added another world crown to the one achieved in 1978.
In this new crown, Mireya Luis (best attacker) and Regla Torres (most valuable player and best blocker) should be highlighted for their performance throughout the tournament and their contribution to winning the title.

**Greatness of the Spectacular Morenas of the Caribbean

Four years later Cuba participated in the World Championship in Japan and once again won the gold medal, to accumulate its third crown, which together with the Olympic crowns of Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney and the three World Cups, made this team one of the two greatest in the world in the 20th century.
In addition, Cuba had the best volleyball player and best coach of the 20th century, a condition that was granted to Regla Torres and Eugenio George and in honor to the truth deserved the distinction of best team as well.

In conclusion

Among the most successful teams in world volleyball is the Cuban women's team and many of its players are in the firmament of this sport. For this and other reasons, it is necessary to find the necessary strategies to return to the top of world volleyball. Among these actions must be taken into account the improvement of our coaches, the application of science and technique and the search for the best experiences. Cuba needs to return to the world stage.

Una discusión que se convierte en necesidad de publicación

Hace algunos días tuve una discusión con un amante de los deportes mucho más joven que yo. Es un gran conocedor del fútbol y el béisbol, pero en otros deportes no alcanza a ver mucho más allá de balones y bates. La discusión estuvo basada cuando lo invité a ver un juego del mundial femenino y en medio del juego le dije que nosotros tuvimos un equipo de voleibol que se medía, con cualquiera de estos equipos y los vencía. Montó en cólera y me dijo que era imposible, que Cuba no podía haber tenido un equipo, como el que yo le decía y muchas cosas más.

Evidentemente este joven no conoce mucho de la historia de nuestro movimiento deportivo. Es cierto que no estamos atravesando por el mejor momento, pero las páginas hermosas escritas por nuestros deportistas están ahí y tienen que servir de inspiración, para retomar el camino que hemos perdido. Ese es el pretexto, para hacer esta publicación y un homenaje a las **ESPECTACULARES MORENAS DEL CARIBE.

Por estos días se está desarrollando el XIX Campeonato Mundial de Voleibol femenino. La cita se celebra de manera conjunta, entre los países de Holanda y Polonia. Hay un equipo que no está en esa cita porque ha bajado mucho su nivel, pero que es un referente del voleibol mundial.

Me da nostalgia no ver a las Espectaculares Morenas del Caribe en un evento de este tipo, pero no estamos al nivel de ellos. Eso no siempre fue así. De cualquier manera, quiero contarles algo que ocurrió en el Campeonato Mundial de Voleibol del desarrollado en Brasil.…

El récord

Transcurría el año 1994 y el gigante sudamericano se aprestaba a desarrollar una nueva edición del Campeonato Mundial Femenino de Voleibol. Cuba salía como favorita por las medallas de oro conseguidas en los juegos olímpicos de Barcelona en 1992 y el Primer Grand Prix desarrollado en 1993.

A pesar del favoritismo del plantel cubano, participaban otros equipos de la élite mundial que venían a ganar la medalla de oro y otros que, además de ese empeño, querían quitarse la espina de Barcelona y demostrar su fuerza, como era el caso del anfitrión Brasil.

Desde el inicio del torneo, el equipo antillano demostró que venía por todas las victorias y fue derrotando a cada uno de los equipos a los cuales se enfrentó, pero había una particularidad en cada una de las victorias logradas y era el hecho de alcanzarlas todas por tres sets a cero (3-0). Así llegó el partido final que ponía frente a frente a dos conjuntos latinoamericanos con un nivel de juego parejo y un temperamento fuerte. Si, por una parte, Cuba tenía la condición de favorita, Brasil era un tremendo rival y, además, era el anfitrión.

El partido comenzó con la fuerza y la ¨garra¨ de las cubanas y la respuesta de sus rivales unida a la torcida brasileña. A pesar del esfuerzo del equipo auriverde y la fanaticada del país anfitrión, nada impidió que Cuba ganara la medalla de oro y protagonizara un hecho inédito, algo que ningún equipo podrá superar: ganar la medalla de oro y todos los partidos, sin perder un set. De esta forma, Cuba sumaba otra corona mundial a la lograda en 1978.

En esta nueva corona hay que destacar a Mireya Luis (mejor atacadora) y Regla Torres (jugadora más valiosa y mejor bloqueadora) por el desempeño y el rendimiento que tuvieron durante todo el torneo y la contribución hecha a la conquista del título.

Cuatro años después Cuba participó en el Mundial de Japón y nuevamente volvió a alzarse con la medalla de oro, para acumular su tercera corona, que unida a las coronas olímpicas de Barcelona, Atlanta y Sídney y las tres Copas del Mundo, convirtieron a este equipo en uno de los dos más grande del mundo en el Siglo XX.

Unido a esto Cuba tuvo a la mejor voleibolista y mejor entrenador del siglo XX, condición que les fue otorgada a Regla Torres y Eugenio George y en honor a la verdad mereció la distinción de mejor equipo también.

A modo de conclusión

Entre los equipos más laureados del voleibol mundial está el equipo femenino cubano y muchas de sus jugadoras están en el firmamento de este deporte. Por esa y otras razones urne encontrar las estrategias necesarias, para volver a la cima del voleibol mundial. Dentro de esas acciones se debe tener en cuenta la superación de nuestros entrenadores, laa aplicación de la ciencia y la técnica y la búsqueda de las mejores experiencias. Cuba necesita volver al escenario mundial.
