Countdown 24 days to go! | peak week 3

Welcome back to my running blog!

13th of April is getting closer! On that day I will run the NN Marathon Rotterdam 2025 , which will be exactly 9 weeks after my last marathon - making it my fastest turn around so far.

I follow a schedule where I have 3 peak weeks followed by 3 weeks of recovery (taper weeks). This is my 3th peak week in which I want to run roughly 90 km (peak week 1: 77km , peak week 2: 86 km).
After today’s run I completed 29 / 90 km - so I still have a busy week ahead!

Since the NN Marathon Rotterdam 2024 - I have ran over 2500 km, but the times I experienced really tired / heavy legs could be counted on one hand. Today I did experience it again - to an extent that I was considering walking the last 2.5 km. Although this may sound odd - I really appreciate that feeling, this is what you want in your peak weeks as it gives you the opportunity to push your boundaries and thus your performance. Compound fatigue means also that your body is giving you the signal to focus on recovery. Therefore experiencing this in the last peak week is perfectly timed!

During this run I was able to continue without needing to walk - I just smiled and welcomed the feeling. Knowing it will help me grow. I will make a small adjustment in this weeks training schedule - tomorrow’s planned tempo run is likely going to be replaced by another recovery run - in order to balance the benefit and risk of overloading.

**Coaching during the kids run! **
Last year my kids ran the Rotterdam kids run 1km which is an amazing event that is hosted the day before the marathon. During the kidsrun over 10000 supporters are cheering for all participants on that small area. Each kid can register with one of the parents as a coach that runs along. Last year I ran with my oldest daughter (and my wife with my youngest). This year I will be running with my youngest. As a family we try to do a small training run every sunday to help them prepare (and have fun together!) the kids run last year was such an amazing experience that it made so much more impact on my compared to the full marathon the day after (being a proud dad ;)) can’t wait for this years edition on april 12th!

Happy running!
