La jornada de octavos de final del torneo de maestros de Miami, ha estado amenizada por los mejores tenistas de la semana, algunas sorpresas y sobre todo, una espectacular demostración de gran nivel de juego. Pero más allá de la agradable sorpresa que nos ha regalado el argentino Francisco Cerúndulo, al eliminar al estadounidense Frances Tiafoe, hubo un partido que fue de mis preferidos y se trata del que protagonizaron el griego Stéfanos Tsitsipás y el español Carlos Alcaraz; en lo que fue el segundo encuentro entre ambos.

But beyond the pleasant surprise that the Argentine Francisco Cerúndulo has given us, by eliminating the American Frances Tiafoe, there was a match that was one of my favorites and it was the one between the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz; in what was the second match between them.

Lo curioso del caso, es que los dos choques han caído del lado de la joven estrella del tenis, quien se afianza más en su estatus de nuevo ídolo naciente del deporte blanco; y que representa la bocanada de aire fresco que garantiza la continuidad del buen tenis, posterior a la era del “Big Four”; Carlitos ocupa la actual posición número 16 del escalafón, mientras que el ateniense es el dueño de la quinta posición; pero además de su diferencia de ranking, la experiencia también favorece estadísticamente al heleno.

No obstante, todos esos datos matemáticos han sido rotos una vez más, por el nacido en El Palmar. Carlos da la impresión de ser todo un veterano del circuito, cuando en realidad está apenas en su segunda temporada en la máxima categoría profesional, en la que ha avanzado a pasos agigantados, en cuanto a nivel de juego y mentalidad para resolver problemas y situaciones propias de este maravilloso deporte, las que asume con la madurez de una estrella mundial. Recuerdo que hace pocos días, se retiraba a lo grande tras ser eliminado por Rafa en las semifinales de Indian Wells.

De esas derrotas ha aprendido a sacar lo positivo, para convertirlo en enseñanzas, eso lo demuestra al hacer las correcciones en cancha y sobre todo, en la forma como detecta los flancos débiles de sus rivales; así como con Stéfanos, que venía jugando a muy buen ritmo, incluso creo que ha incrementado la velocidad de su fuerte drive; pero hasta eso ha logado dominar Carlos, con una especie de naturalidad, que deja pasmado a más de uno jajaja. El partido inició con el servicio del griego, que sacó fuerte y bien colocado (como siempre).

El español arrancó con su habitual ímpetu, defendiendo y cubriendo cada rincón de la pista, pero a su vez estuvo algo cauteloso, dado que el griego estaba golpeando fuerte, cada bola que éste lanzaba. Luego de algunos puntos brillantes por parte de Carlos, fue el de Atenas quien pegó primero, quebrando el servicio al sexto game, Tsitsipás también observó los errores de su rival y le restó muy bien a los pies, generando un pequeño desbalance en el murciano, que dejó la bola en la red por golpearla mientras regresaba a su posición de fondo.

Pero el ataque incesante de Carlos, le permitió recuperarse al mejor estilo de Nadal, porque cuando estaba abajo 2 – 5, inició una gran remontada a ritmo sostenido, que le permitió ganar 5 games consecutivos (y ante Stéfanos es muy difícil de hacer); pero luego de un interesante duelo de drop shots (una muestra de que Tsitsipás asumió el reto muy en serio), pero eso le costó el darse cuenta que estaba siendo superado por el muchacho de 18 años, que además mostró otras herramientas, como el uso perfecto de globos a distancia milimétrica.

Fueron 54 minutos de una emocionante batalla por establecer un dominio, pero a pesar del esfuerzo y reajuste del griego, era Carlos quien seguía utilizando acertadamente, mayor cantidad de recursos técnicos, como el smash con el que cerró sus últimos puntos y dibujando el 7 – 5 imponente en la pizarra. Fue un primer set brillante para ambos, pero con el más joven, tomando las riendas del encuentro. Esa remontada se tradujo en un golpe moral, que a mi parecer, también determinó las acciones del segundo set, afectando el juego de Stéfanos.

Carlitos inicia la segunda manga con otro quiebre (tercero en fila) y luego sostiene para confirmar la ventaja; el griego intentó regresar intensificando sus ataques y casi logra su cometido en el tercer game, pero aunque estuvo cerca, ese máximo esfuerzo de Stef no fue suficiente para detener el vendaval de Alcaraz, que no paró de lucirse con sus tiros de todos los calibres. Carlos cerraría con otro drop shot incontestable, que rompía el saque griego al noveno game; con 1 hora y cincuenta minutos de cine, perdón, de juego jajaja.

Carlos would close with another uncontestable drop shot, breaking the Greek serve in the ninth game; with 1 hour and fifty minutes of cinema, sorry, of game hahaha.

Así de sólido es el avance a cuartos de final, para el nuevo rey del tenis. Ahora Carlitos se enfrentará el día de mañana ante el serbio Miomir Kecmanovic, un chamo de 22 años que viene con una carrera ascendente y que está teniendo un torneo de ensueño, superando grandes raquetas como la de S. Korda, Félix Auger y Taylor Fritz. Este choque de jóvenes talentos, pudiese ser el preludio de la verdadera (Next Gen) de tenistas dominantes en el circuito; y desde ya, lo recomiendo como el duelo más atractivo de esta etapa.

Now Carlitos will face tomorrow the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, a 22 year old boy who is having a dream tournament, surpassing great players like S. Korda, Felix Auger and Taylor Fritz. This clash of young talents could be the prelude to the real (Next Gen) of dominant tennis players in the circuit; and I recommend it as the most attractive duel of this stage.
