Ha concluido de gran manera, la edición número 115 del torneo de Maestros de Montecarlo y no podía ser de otra forma sino con una batalla deportiva de alto calibre. Extrañamente, el evento que estuvo lleno de sorpresas durante su fase eliminatoria, mantuvo una constante y fue la presencia del griego Stéfanos Tsitsipás, quien en su condición de campeón defensor del título, pudo superar cada escalón, para dejar en el camino a jugadores de la talla de: Alexander Zverev, Diego Schwartzman, entro otros; y que en la instancia final se enfrentó con el tenista revelación de la justa, el español Alejandro Davidovich.

The 115th edition of the Monte Carlo Masters Tournament has concluded in great fashion, and it could not have been any other way but with a sporting battle of the highest caliber. Strangely, the event that was full of surprises during its elimination phase, kept one constant and that was the presence of the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who in his condition of defending champion of the title, was able to overcome each step, to leave on the way players of the stature of: Alexander Zverev, Diego Schwartzman, among others; and who in the final instance faced the revelation tennis player of the fair, the Spanish Alejandro Davidovich.

El nacido en Málaga hizo soñar a la fanaticada, de la cual se ganó su apoyo a base de esfuerzo y determinación. Con una temporada poco productiva, Alex se abrió paso tras superar a Marcos Girón, el número 1 Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Taylor Fritz y Grigor Domitrov; sin duda un recorrido cuesta arriba, que pudo superar en gran forma, exhibiendo velocidad de piernas, ajuste en su golpeo de pelota y sobre todo, capacidad de recuperación. Con su juventud y explosividad, consiguió en una misma competición, algunos de sus triunfos más significativos en su carrera.

The Malaga-born player made the fans dream, and earned their support through hard work and determination. With a not very productive season, Alex made his way through after beating Marcos Giron, number 1 Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Taylor Fritz and Grigor Domitrov; undoubtedly an uphill journey, which he was able to overcome in great shape, exhibiting leg speed, adjustment in his ball striking and above all, resilience. With his youth and explosiveness, he achieved in the same competition, some of his most significant triumphs in his career.

La apertura estuvo a cargo del heleno, quien trajo consigo nuevamente su fuerte servicio, aunque la garra del español no se hizo esperar y recurrió a su particular drive paralelo con efecto abierto, ese que le sumó puntos importantes en sus partidos previos ante Taylor y Grigor. El graderío se hacía efervescente con el primer break del encuentro, a cargo del joven malagueño al tercer game; pero Stéfanos se recuperó a lo grande, quebrando el siguiente game en cero. Tsitsipás demostraba su carácter en el court y no permitió los intentos de despegue del español.

El griego volvía a quebrar en el octavo game, con la ayuda de los errores no forzados de su rival, Alex cayó en la trampa del cambio de ritmo y distancia, con tiros largos al fondo. Con ese panorama Stéfanos sacaba para el set y eso lo confirmó de manera sólida, con un ace a la T, que detuvo las acciones con el marcador 6 – 3 en solo 31 minutos de juego. La segunda manga, tuvo un inicio muy expectante, dado que de mi parte, esperaba la reacción del español, para alargar el compromiso a una vuelta más.

The second set had a very expectant start, since I was waiting for the Spaniard's reaction to extend the match to one more round.

Sin embargo el ateniense aprovechó el parpadeo de Alex, para recibirlo con un break (Parecía ansioso y volvía a errar con tiros largos) y en pocos minutos ya estaba abajo 0 – 2. Considero que Davidovich debió variar más las áreas de colocación del saque, porque estuvo sacando abierto en repetidas ocasiones, permitiendo la recepción cómoda a su rival. Pero en el tercer game Alex tomó riesgos acertados, con el saque y volea, logrando retomar su confianza. Por su parte, Tsitsipás también quedó en evidencia, al quedarse muy plantado en el centro, luego de su drive invertido, es decir, no estaba volviendo a tiempo y los tiros al contrapié le hicieron pagar jeje.

But in the third game Alex took the right risks, with his serve and volley, managing to regain his confidence. On the other hand, Tsitsipas was also in evidence, as he stayed too much planted in the middle, after his reverse drive, that is to say, he was not returning on time and the counterpunching shots made him pay hehe.

El español retrocedió un poco durante su recepción y pudo recuperar el pulso en sus tiros; Davidovich se ganaba los aplausos del público, al mostrar temple para sostener, quebrar y sostener de nuevo para irse arriba; así se juega una final, no te puedes guardar nada, es ahora o nunca. Y mientras Tsitsipás volvía a dominar son su saque, Alejandro variaba y ensayaba el drop shot de lo lindo, aunque Stef luego le devolvía el favor y mantuvieron la igualdad, hasta el noveno game. Fue un momento crítico manejado con mejor forma por Tsitsipás, que logró imponer su fortaleza y precisión.

El griego sacaría para el campeonato, pero nuevamente vimos el resurgir de Davidovich, con una reacción sorpresiva, seguía corriendo y dando su mejor esfuerzo, el español logró quebrar y fue un episodio mágico; creo haberle aplaudido desde mi asiento por ello jajaja. Y es que con su esfuerzo, Alex se ganó el corazón de todos, ya había luchado como todo un guerrero al superar a Novak, a Taylor y a Grigor, tipos ganadores que se vieron frenados por el ímpetu de un chaval que cree en sí mismo. Pero en el tenis, no valen los sentimentalismos, son las raquetas las que hablan y demuestran en la pista, quien es el ganador.

And the fact is that with his effort, Alex won everyone's heart, he had already fought like a warrior to overcome Novak, Taylor and Grigor, winning guys who were stopped by the momentum of a kid who believes in himself. But in tennis, sentimentalism is not valid, it is the racquets that speak and show on the court, who is the winner.

El malagueño pudo recuperarse y llevar el partido hasta el tie break, allí llegó a sus límites y Tsitsipás manejó las acciones a placer, afinando su puntería y variedad de tiros, rasantes y a las esquinas para extenuar y sacer de confort al oponente. A pesar de las diferencias, el cierre sería espectacular, con los dos guerreros tirados en la pista, Alejandro tirándose una vez más para defenderse y Stéfanos para celebrar su segundo título consecutivo en el Rólex Masters 1000 de Montecarlo. Ha sido 1 hora con 36 minutos de batalla tenística, a la altura de una final, el marcador final 6 – 3, 7 – 6 (3).

Terminó así el sueño de Alejandro Davidovich, quien con las botas puestas planteó un partido de ida y vuelta, resistiendo hasta las últimas instancias del encuentro. No cabe duda que lo dejó todo en la cancha y eso es aplaudible y admirable. Ver a un jugador tan inspirado en su juego, es agradable a los ojos de los seguidores, en mi caso particular confieso que soñé con el triunfo de Davidovich y verle levantar un trofeo que bien merecido estaba, sin embargo el portento griego hizo los honores y se empleó a fondo, para defender su feudo. Alejandro sigue sin ganarle al griego, luego de tres choques, pero con esta gran actuación, logra ascender hasta la posición número 27 del ranking ATP. Al final se impuso el mejor, un tenista con recorrido y experiencia en la etapa decisiva de este prestigioso torneo.

Thus ended the dream of Alejandro Davidovich, who, with his boots on, played a back-and-forth match, resisting until the last moments of the game. There is no doubt that he left everything on the court and that is to be applauded and admired. To see a player so inspired in his game, is pleasant to the eyes of the followers, in my particular case I confess that I dreamed of Davidovich's triumph and see him lift a trophy that was well deserved, however the Greek portent did the honors and worked hard to defend his fiefdom. Alexander still hasn't beaten the Greek after three matches, but with this great performance, he managed to climb up to the 27th position of the ATP ranking. In the end, the best prevailed, a tennis player with experience in the decisive stage of this prestigious tournament.
