Obidos, a little town in Portugal

The colourful little town of Obidos has approximately 3,100 inhabitants, with really just one main street the Rua Direita.

_DSC3384.jpeg

It stands on a hilltop, encircled by an ancient fortified wall. It is a touristic haven. Best to visit early, as I did or late in the day to beat the hordes of the all-inclusives who have dragged themselves away from the nearby coastal golf resorts for a half day trip, "to do Portugal"

Fuck, I am such a snob!

_DSC3381.jpeg

Love the creative way the chocolate is melting in then sun.

_DSC3378.jpeg

Lots of locally made gifts to take home with you, at touristic, no discount, no haggle prices.

IGREJA DE SANTA MARIA

Originally a Visigothic temple, then became a mosque, and in the 12th C once again turned into a church. A devastating earthquake struck in the early 16th C resulting in a rebuild as we now see .

_DSC3399.jpeg

In 1411, the original church saw a major event in Portugal's history: the wedding of 10-year-old King Afonso and his 8-year-old bride Queen Isabel.

Yes you read it right, FFS, when I was 10, I didn't even know what a winkle was for let alone the fact that girls didn't have one!!!

The blue tiles are dated as far back as 1690,

The tomb of João de Noronha, a local nobleman, dating from 1525, completely carved from stone, and is protected as a National Monument.

Loving the signs telling the kids "not to write on the walls"

Where is Papa Smurf?

_DSC3398.jpeg

It was actually a Thursday, I wonder if they have a gin for every other day of the week.

IGREJA DE SANTIAGO

Igreja de Santiago, a church, originally built in the 12th-century, rebuilt in 1772, after the earthquake, was a stopping off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. A religious hike guaranteed to give you blisters.

_DSC3405.jpeg

Obidos is also famous (so I now find out) for its bookstores. There are 14 such shops in the town. Including this now redundant Igreja de Santiago,

Since 2015, Óbidos holds an annual international literary festival; the Fólio (Festival Literário Internacional de Óbidos) which takes places in October.

UNESCO recognises Óbidos as City of Literature.

Exactly… it is fun to see 😎

Will do, you do the same. I am preparing my next (have to) trip… but this time I stick 4 days of holidays behind the trip and will spend some time in Scotland in 3 weeks.

It's a very quiet town, I think... I love the urban design and the narrow streets and also your shots.

I always really enjoy reading what you write and even more the way you do it 😁 but... Damn! What happened in the last shot? That man looks like he farted 😂🤣

Have a great day @grindle friend!

cheers @dimascastillo90 always enjoy your input. I guess the last shot was a spur of the moment thing, and couldn't help myself when writing it up. It is as though my fingers have a mind of their own, and at times they get carried away. But hey wtf, life is too sort to be serious!
