Good grief it was wet out there today!

I don't mind drizzle or light rain, but for the heavier stuff I usually plan my run to fit around the rain. As you can see from the forecast above, that wasn't an option!

As I knew I was going to get soaked I figured I might as well dress correctly for it! I dug out the Waterproof Jacket, which has a hood. I decided to wear the peaked cap as well which would keep the rain off my glasses, and the hood fitted quite nice over the top of that. I also ditched my usual shorts and found an old pair of running tights that I bought 10 years ago, and no longer really wear now.

20170103_165737A.jpg

The reason for the trousers was the fact that I'm still not fully running yet. Today I was aiming for a longer distance, and as I was spend 2 thirds of the time walking, there was a risk of cooling down too quickly.

Suitably dressed, I headed out into the rain. The plan today was to do 10km worth of running and walking, which would be a useful increase to the 6km I covered over the last 2 runs. I estimated it would take me over an hour and a half which be would be a decent amount of time 'spent on feet'

I wasn't running the whole thing of course, but the 90 minutes of continuous movement would be good as part of my injury recovery process

Once again I was on the bypass route, and while on the previous runs I turned around at the roundabout, for this run I carried on going forwards

20170103_171123A.jpg

Yep... very very wet!

20170103_171139A.jpg

I did run past this little underpass. It goes under the bypass

20170103_171226A.jpg

There is bits of naff graffiti, in this underpass. I don't mind good quality graffiti, some the artwork produced is amazing. Unfortunately some the 'pieces' here were not quite up to standard...

20170103_171156A.jpg

I mean, I agree with the sentiment and all, but yeah it was still a bit rubbish!

Enough naff 'artwork', lets get back to the run!

20170103_172440A.jpg

I followed the path along the bypass, which went under the bridge...

20170103_172905A.jpg

...and towards another roundabout. At the roundabout my watch told me I had travelled 5km, which was my cue to turn around and head back home.

It was still raining heavily, but I was reasonably comfortable due to the choice of clothes I had picked out... definitely got that right today! In fact I actually really enjoyed the session, that may be a reflection of how much I have missed running, and how eager I am to get back into running regularly.

20170103_173312A.jpg

I arrived home pretty much on target of just over 90 minutes, and the most important thing of course is I had no noticeable issues regarding the calf injury, which gives me hope that I'm finally on the mend.

image.png

I'm still only running for small sections, and walking in between.

Now it was time take off all the wet clothes, stuff my shoes with newspaper to help dry them out, and then have a nice warm shower :-)

Well done on getting out in that. It was much the same here, but mostly dry when I was tailwalking at parkrun. I plan to run tomorrow morning, but the forecast looks better then. At least with a run you know it's not for long and you can dive in the shower afterwards to warm up.

needs must and all that, and I think getting the layers right helped me to enjoy it. I've done runs in just shorts and a tshirt, and while the cold doesn't bother me too much, the relentless pelting rain sucks the fun out of the session.

With a hat and a hood, and my arms and legs covered, I barely noticed it!

I hope your meetup went ok, I've seen @anna-newkey's post just now, looks like you got some sunshine for it!

We were so lucky with the weather. I got wet going to work today. We need lots more meetups around the country.

Its tough getting out the door in bad weather, but feels so good, getting it done. especially if you got all the layers right, I always seem to end up too hot or cold.

I guess it helps that we Brits are used to 15C and rain, its pretty much the standard weather here. 10 degrees colder or 5 degrees warmer its much harder to work out, and yep I almost always seem to be overdressed and overheating!

When there is such a beautiful path with scenic views, a person does not know the time when he starts walking. Natural beauty always attracts the people's attention. Clouds looks so beautiful and amazing.

It is easy to get lost in the moment when in a beautiful location... do you go out for walks/runs often?

That's a decent calorie burn for not running the whole time. Isn't that like 60% of what a run that long would be?

Nice rain rain rain rain rain rain.
Here it's hot.

Well actually there isn't much difference between walking and running, they're both very similar movements. Running is higher (obviously) but not as high as you might think. Its one of the reasons that the general consensus for weightloss exercise is not to bother with intense workouts, and just make an effort to walk more.

er yeah it looks like 40% of the planet is currently on fire. We had 40C (100F?) for a couple of weeks last summer which was awful. I'm fed up of the cold and the rain, but if its a choice between dripping wet or burnt to a crisp, then I'll choose the rain any day!

I hope you get some respite from the heat soon!

Hi!

Rain is also much better than smoke-filled skies and lungs.

We get a really nice breeze every evening, so the heat hasn't felt at all unbearable.

Cardio is really good for the heart, who cares about weight loss! All mine happens on the ice and long doggy crow walks anymore. Happy running!

Hello!

I'd forgotten about the wildfire smoke, I didn't know how far north you are (I think you're in Portland? I don't actually know where that is lol)

I care about weightloss haha, but its all good now that I'm running again although the lack of running reminded how much I enjoy just going for a wander in the evenings

I could do with a little doggy friend too!

Little doggy friends are the best, especially for the wanderings.

I'm north enough to get long summer days and long winter nights. Portland is here:

IMG_1552.jpg

The geological structure of our location creates a semi-stagnant pocket, so during peak forest fire season we sometimes have severe smoke for days at a time. It's lame. People need to stop burning down the woods.

Apparently in 2020 our Pacific Northwest smoke made it all the way to Japan!

everything is better with doggy friends, EXCEPT when they try to pinch my snacks!

Thanks for the map! (dunno why I didn't bother looking it up myself to be fair). It looks like you're on a similar latitude to us in the UK so a similar mix of long summer days and long winter nights

Woohoo! er... or not lol. I know some fires are started naturally, but most seem to be started by dumbasses pratting around... I don't get it.

Looking at google maps, I guess I've never really though about the landscape in the US. I suppose all the movies make me think of either sprawling cities or barren dessert canyon things

image.png

Mostly green on the east coast, rocky dessert stuff in the west other than a tiny strip of green right on the west coast with Portland nestled somewhere in it. Definitely greener than I expected haha

Oh yeah, those movies give horrible impressions of everything. But you can find some real desert cowfolk with real old western accents in Southeastern Oregon! I was super surprised when I made that "discovery."

I went to Scotland in May of 2019 and camped up by Loch Fyne. The landscape was very Oregon-y! And it was cold as fuck at night. OMG.

Blimey Dan, I'm impressed. Even more so as you did this in the rain. I must take a walk down there though. I like the way some of the paths weave about in your pics.
