Watching a stranger riding the wave

My friend broke her leg the first time she ever even attempted to surf, got out on the board in shall water fell off and her ankle got stuck in the sand in some way and it moved and broke her foot or lower part of her leg. I can't remember the specifics of it but it would be hard to try it again after knowing that that had happened. An unfortunate part of most sports.

It's weird to me to not teach kids how to swim and then allow kids to play at lakes or the ocean or even go out on boats. One kid or even adult gets in trouble and another who doesn't know how to swim tries to help and suddenly you have 2 deaths. Swimming should be taught to kids by parents in a similar way to riding a bike or brushing your teeth. Swimming means you can be safer in the water, never totally safe but the risk of dying is much lower.

I am 34 year odd but still don't know how to swim :(
I have not given importance t swimming which I guess was the bad idea. Swimming is a good exercise also.. may be I will not repeat the same mistake with my kids....

I think as an adult if you don't know how to swim and be cautious near lakes, rivers, the ocean and swimming pools then that's a good safe strategy.

The news I read sometimes is of the people who might drink too much and fall into water by accident or go out on a small boat and then fall into a lake and sometimes it ends in tragedy. Whereas if they stayed away from the water it would be ok. Even people who swim strongly need to be cautious too or currents on rivers or the ocean.

I'm not trying to criticise people who can't swim and as an adult you may still learn if you want to if there are lessons after covid has improved around the world. To me it's a great life skill and then you can show your kids too and bring them to lessons.

My vote value is too small to be worthwhile on comments so I voted some of your posts instead.
