Line to Life

IMG_4254 (6).jpeg

Lines are everywhere, real and imagined.

They keep us from straying into oncoming traffic, from wandering around while waiting and then missing our turn. They measure the temperature, space, and distance.

Lines define an arena, fuse ball table, or playing field. Go T-birds.

Yes, a new season of Canadian university football has begun. UBC did indeed win its opener against the Regina Rams and prettily handily. It should be an exciting season out there on the artificial and/or sod-laden lined terf. Under the sun, the rain and the snow. Nothing separating the yards but lines and downs.

We are urged to color within the lines and not to cross certain ones. We have even attempted to contain time within little minute and hour hatches. Alas these lines have slipped away from me lately, Hivelanders. I know have been MIA around here. I have wanted very much to spend more time with my online famifably, but there has been just so much to do, as the new school year rev's up. We have start up activities acting the existential blob and consuming most of our time line. (Did you see what I did with that?) Elements of visual design has me realizing that art, the most creative of human endeavours, too can be defined and contained with those little marks on the paper called lines. Always there seems method, even in madness. So shows even the likes of Van Gogh. Never again will I see just the mystery but also all those little hatches.

From our studies ...

There are 5 main types of lines found in artwork.

IMG_4254 (5).jpeg

  • Vertical - up and down, without a slant, gives appearance of height because they are perpendicular to the Earth and can run to the sky.
  • Horizontal - right to left, can create a feeling of peace to a work because objects that are parallel to the Earth are at rest

IMG_4248 (1).jpeg

  • Diagonal - neither vertical, nor horizontal, but straight - create a feeling of movement in artwork because a diagonal object is either about to collapse/fall or spring into motion
  • Curved not straight - create energies like sensuality or play

  • Zig Zag - short diagonal lines that connect and change in direction, reverting back and forth, they create a high, dynamic energy

Lines don't actually have to be drawn but can be only implied by the placement of objects in an artwork or the line of sight created by a character represented in the work.

Lines can be used to draw attention or emphasize other elements in the same art piece.

Some fun learning for younger or groovier learners.

With lines, we can create varied shape, texture, and tone. Different techniques include the following.

  • Hatching - the use of linear(straight) lines - the closer the lines, the darker the value - pressure and darker nibs can add to the effect

IMG_4254 (2).jpeg

  • Crosshatching - uses layers of hatching at different angles - vertical, horizontal, diagonal.

  • Contour Hatching - the direction of the lines creates a 3-D effect - curved hatching creates depth and shape

  • Scumbling - scribbled marks to build up value and texture - changing direction can add more interest than uniform circular scribbles

  • Random Hatching - layers of short straight marks - creates various textures
  • Stippling - tiny dots, the closer the dots, the darker the tone - larger dots will do this more quickly but will make the work more rough or simple looking

The end of August/beginning of September is always a busy time getting the smaller humans back into a school routine. And getting the bigger humans into a school routine, too!

I see a lot of similarities in the art lines you review here and photography; canvas art and photography are both art, after all, and would follow a lot of similar rules. I do like how you share what you're teaching and learning. Very cool.

Go Dino's ... not likely. LOL. Thanks Victor. Learning is so much fun and lines are every where, trying to make sense out of the chaos:)

Hah, yeah, UC football Dino's aren't having the best year so far. Nor are the Stampeders for that matter. Not a good year to be a fan of southern Alberta football.

Always such beautiful pictures of flowers, amazing!

Looks like the your kids are back into learning. I don't think I ever really thought about lines in that context, but it's a great way to make sense of things.

Now that guy with the eyes moving... Just plain creepy!

their creative power is in our ability to see them at all. So many cannot, like at a magic show.
