What Steem Really Needs To Change The World

Steem, along with the entire cryptocurrency industry, has the potential to change the world.

To achieve that end, what is required?

As I thought about this, I came across an area where society is falling woefully short. For this reason, I think we need to make a concerted effort to fix this problem.

So what is it that Steem needs to change the world?

We need more boobs!!!

Source

Get your minds out of the gutter.

No I am not talking about porn although I do hope DPorn does take off.

Instead, I am talking about vaginas. We need more of them around here. This place, as a percentage, has far too many penises.

If cryptocurrency is going to change the world, we must address the issue with women. Depending upon the area, the female experience ranges from effectively being enslaved to having to operate with a glass ceiling above their heads. Throughout much of the world, women are viewed as second class citizens, forced into dependency by a male dominated society.

One of the main factors of this is economic. Since women lack the ability to earn money in many places, it puts them in a position of total dependence. This is only increasing as our entire economic system shifts wealth into the hands of a few. It is putting everyone in a position of fighting for scraps, something that does not bode well for those who are starting from behind.

Cryptocurrency is the ultimate game changer in this regard. A blockchain does not care what race, gender, or background one is. It simply sends out tokens as coded. Along the same lines, most people online are not aware of the gender of one is she creates a profile that is rather neutral. Few, I hypothesize, consider the sex of a person when giving an upvote. It simply does not matter.

So why haven't women gravitated towards cryptocurrency? To me, it seems like an ideal solution to some of the inequality problems we are facing, at least economically.

A bit part of the reason is because this is still in the realm of the geeks. We are still dealing with something that is technically advanced. Cryptocurrency is still confusing making it difficult for the average person to understand. Hence we see an over representation of males since the world of geeks are mostly filled with penises. Women simply did not make great strides into that arena.

That is changing as we see the applications becoming easier to use. Personally, I love the applications that one can start using in under 5 minutes. Two stand out to me: @dlike and @actifit. Both of those are very similar to applications we already use. Posting on Dlike is no different then being on Pinterest. Actifit, on the other hand, requires only a simple download from Google or Apple, movement throughout the day, and a post with 40 words.

Incidentally, this is what is going to be required for mass adoption. Male or female, most of the population is not going to get involved in something that is overly complex. If the Internet did not have the browser, it would be a platform only used by a handful of people.

There are too many situations in the world where one is not able to strive for a better life even if she wants it. Cultural beliefs aside, it is impossible to do when financial opportunities are non-existent. Thus, we need to express how there are different options. As long as one has an Internet connection and a smartphone, the ability to change one's life exists. Logging onto one of the Steem interfaces can be an effective starting point.

The present system is trying to crack down on cryptocurrency. Is their reasoning to keep gender inequality in place? I do not believe that is at the forefront of their minds but I will say they like the system as it is. Like the old saying states, "It is an exclusive club and you aren't part of it". This is their main goal: power and control.

Cryptocurrency offers the opportunity to help the most disadvantaged of us. Ironically, as the system swallows more people, the "disadvantaged" is growing to include all of society. That said, we can immediately start to attack an historic problem.

For this reason, we need to invite our wives and daughters onto this platform. We need to get our mothers going on this. Aunts, cousins, and nieces all should be approached. Instead of using their platform to battle the White House, the U.S. Women's Soccer Team should be telling everyone about Steem (and similar platforms).

It is rare for the minds of people to change. Laws can be written but get ignored. Cryptocurrency is a solution that can start to eradicate the problem immediately. On Steem, the starting point can be 7 days later when the first SP shows up in an account.

And now, with the Steem-Engine based tokens, there are more ways for people to earn. I feel early adopters are going to benefit greatly and the more women who are involved, the better this is for humanity in general.

If Steem can get the process started in this area, it will be a major success.

Obviously there’s no doubt we need some gender equality space, maybe even more than the other sectors. ‘Boobs’, as you say, statistically get more business than us ‘penises’.

💪 as I said in my positive hopeful first post of the day, we must endure! I'm not going to stop being vocal about this shortcoming and obvious handicap steem has though. Will I make friends, well no, not the status quo kind. But, if this place succeeds l will have done more than making cheerleader hoorah hooray for steem content.

I pretty much only use my mobile to Steem. And, am going strong the entire time I've been here. It functions well enough to getter done for me. Though for that reason I have only checked Steem-engine once. So, i think i am missing out on some tokens like Sportstalk. It's getting pretty complex in Steemland!

It's getting outta hand, and I mean that literally and figuratively! If steem doesn't get with the program, well, I can't make predictions, but I'm going to be a thorn in its side and do all I can to wake these devs up to reality.. It was already complicated in steemland now it's just becoming a joke. Pal has no value without it's native token which ain't ENGINE having value. Scot is like Jon Snow, likeable, not a bastard exactly , but still a bastard..

100% agreed!
Many people here on Steem, especially the bigger ones, still call apps like dlike "SPAM" apps, until some days ago steemcleaners downvoted hundreds of dlike posts...
They still don't get it what we really need on Steem.
It's complicated already, onboarding still not easy...
We need apps like Appics or Dlike, easy to handle for ordinary internet users...
And for sure, we need:

GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS!!!

Have a great day

The watch ads feature on partiko has been down for a while now. It came back up briefly, but it's back out again. I don't know if this is technical or they just ran out of advertisers.

and the other side is pro-death.

The problem with this issue is that there are no good sides. Well, we are speaking of life vs freedom. How many people will actually say "death first"
The even bigger problem is that neither side takes responsibility for the heinous consequences of their stance. Coat hangers is a big reason to be pro-choice. Destroyed women is a big reason to be pro-life.

We have women, many of them all over the crypto space.. no need to dumb it down for us.

Maybe a better article would be to address the issue of having an inviting platform for normies, and the front ends and dapps that are easy to use as well as attractive. That way we aren’t left with a bunch of spam and low quality apps that people only use to get an upvote.

As that’s the real concern, being an attractive platform to outsiders, not that we are - too technically advanced for woman.

The blockchain sees no gender, it sees no race, there is no gender inequality.

Seems your auto votes don’t really care what you say though, and therein lies another huge problem of ours.

The huge problem seems to be your reading comprehension and perspective on things.

Did you read this sentence?

Cryptocurrency is still confusing making it difficult for the average person to understand.

Notice it says "person" and not woman/women. That means both genders.

This was followed up by:

Hence we see an over representation of males since the world of geeks are mostly filled with penises. Women simply did not make great strides into that arena.

Are you disputing the technical industry and all the complimentary facets such as programming is overwhelmingly male? If you are, you are completely mistaken.

The problem here is you take an article that did contain a bit of tongue in cheek but was nowhere stating that crypto is too advanced for women.

And how many times have I posted in articles that the biggest challenge for developers is easy of use? Maybe a dozen times.

You stated this:

We have women, many of them all over the crypto space.. no need to dumb it down for us.

Yes there are women all over the place, that is not disputed. But do you think it is anywhere near 50/50 since that is the percentage of the population? Do you think women are making near half the money or holding half the wealth?

I would say that is not even close to being true. Thus, women are completely under-represented on here as they are in the entire technical arena.

So stop taking this as an attack on women and getting defensive with the idea that I was making the point that it was too complicated for women.

Yes the huge problem here must be my inability to read, rather than your completely off base and quite frankly idiotic post you’ve written here. That does make more sense. 🤔

I do agree with you on one thing though, waaayy too many dicks here, like yourself, with superiority complexes and tone deaf to the world around them.

Also, I wasn’t taking it as an attack.. I just think what you said is dumb.

Came here to say this, more or less.

I would also (hesitantly) add that, from what I've heard / come to understand, many women are disinterested in pursuing a "high-paying corporate job" because those jobs typically revolve around kinda-sorta-ruthlessly squeezing value out of people & systems, while also making large personal sacrifices to the 'work-life-balance' of the individual. There's probably some kind of similar mindset here.

There were quite the number of female STEM students when I was in school (though, probably only about 20% of the class) -- all of them certainly capable of the same work. Just completely disinterested in the boys-club rat-race -- which it kinda feels like here from time-to-(all the)time. Grinding out to create and share what is arguably cool stuff -- only to see it go mostly ignored while slews of posts saying same thing day-in, day-out get the same auto-votes regardless; all while being told that you're a 'snowflake' for pointing out that things are intrinsically unfair (at least in terms of how things are marketed or sold as 'potentially life changing').

Also -- the MAJORITY of content on Steem seems to be related to trend-analysis and markets speculation, which is a pretty male-dominated industry (I think? I don't care, or 'day-trade', so I don't really know). I know that my partner wishes there were more communities on here related to arts and the like.

It kinda reminds me about how my brother has his apartment wired up w/ a DIY voice-assistant to control his lights, etc... Except, the Machine Learning voice-recognition models was more-or-less trained EXCLUSIVELY on male voices, so it has a hard time even noticing his partners voice, let alone understanding it.

Steem isn't complicated. It's presented in a complicated manner though, feels very tedious, and has little-to-no draw for people because they (talking men and women here now) realize that, on the surface and in it's current form, it's the same system -- just presented differently -- early adopters and their friends (AKA 'old money and their buddies') getting early adopter advantages for no real good reason.

0
0
0.000
avatar

...getting early adopter advantages for no real good reason.

There actually are good reasons.

Early adopters (especially buyers) take much more risk by putting their time and other resources (especially money) into a new and unproven product. They are often rewarded much better for that higher risk.

Early adopters on Steem that have been rewarded with more shares (stake) is really no different than investors who get in early with real-world businesses and are able to buy their shares during Series A funding over Series B. Those who invest early often get preferred stock, which can guarantee a higher dividend and which has priority when it comes to distribution.

Early adopters on Steem (miners, buyers, witnesses, other users) bootstrapped the blockchain/network. They assumed much higher risk than those who joined once the system was openly tested, adjusted, and further secured over time. In fact, many early users found their accounts “hacked” via an exploit that needed to be fixed several months after public launch.

So to claim that there is “no good reason” for early-adopter advantages completely ignores the fact that early adoption is what can drive early success...and that the higher risk almost always comes with higher rewards - and it ought to. Any tangible amount of success is usually dependent on it.

Now, that being said...plenty of mistakes have been made here along the way and a lot of these early adopters were handed a lot of money and “influence” for no other reason than showing up. There could have been a little more discretion regarding where the rewards were distributed (both by the code and by humans), but that’s not a great reason to dismiss the early-adopter concept as a whole.

0

Sure -- I suppose that's a totally valid, if not traditional, way to look at it.

I think though that that view ("Satisfying Investors") needs to be analyzed w/ the marketing / message (the "Panacea of the Almighty Blockchain") that people are delivering at the same time:

  • Come to Steem to escape the current manipulated and corrupt financial system;
  • Personal life-changing freedoms for disenfranchised peoples around the world await;
  • "Earn" by blogging/sharing/gambling/whatever-ing;
  • We're entering an "age of abundance";
    • Get yours now and HODL while you can so it's worth more later!!

It strikes me as trying to deliver a message of fantastical promises, while trying as hard as possible to wrangle/constrict a new idea/technology into the well-understood (and abused) little box of an "oldschool heirarchical organizational structure". All while ignoring the fact that that's kinda what people were excited to try to get away from in the first place (as far as I understand it).

Long story short:

  • I definitely see your point, and I get it, despite the fact that I have no love for "investors";
  • I also (obviously) don't really know wtf I'm talking about, but all of this seems like half-measures and compromises on the way towards building something new / different that could actually be useful, compelling, and "game-changing".
  • I would also argue that Steem itself has a type of risk-mitigation / stake-reinforcement built into it (allocating as much of the inflation to your pile of stake as you possibly can) -- so I would suggest that most peoples analysis of the risk:reward ratio is a bit skewed.

I think you may find there is a lot more women on this platform that some realize.

Many of us are using names which are not readily apparent what gender is. Then we don't have to deal with the twits who immediately try to put smart, capable women into trivial gender boxes.

Not referring to what you've written. Getting people comfortable with tech is not easy.

0

No it isnt easy no matter what the gender and the world of crypto is enormous complex at this time for the non-techie.

As I posted above, I am sure there are more women involved in crypto but I would guess it is nowhere near 50/50. On top of that, I doubt the rewards are anywhere near that split either.

It is an opportunity but my conclusion is women, hidden or otherwise, are well under represented on here.

0

You're conflating a bunch of different things here.

In the industrialized world, there are no barriers to women using crypto. Interest in such things tends to run along the same percentages of other tech areas - maybe 80% men, 20% women. The only real issue here is if men are being assholes to women as a group or not. There was a story last year about a BTC conference going to a strip club for "networking." That's pretty far over on the being an asshole spectrum. Simple solution, don't be an asshole.

In parts of the world where women are being oppressed, can't own property, are completely dependent on the men in their lives, then crypto can be an incredible power source for freedom as these women gain financial control of their lives. The issue here is physically getting access to computers, mobiles phones, or whatever to run a wallet and then getting funds into those wallets.

I agree completely that women are welcome in tech, and yet it seems fair to point out that more men use steem then women. Thats not a problem exactly unless we want to grow steem faster and offer more humans the freedom of blockchain income.

I didnt say there are barriers to women using crypto in the industrialized world...well no more so than anyone.

I said there are glass ceilings in the industrialized world meaning women, on average, do not get paid for the same work. They are also routinely overlook for promotions because of the gender.

At the risk of over generalizing, it seems to me that risk aversion is at least in part why tech is primarily masculine in its user base. Men, in general, have a higher tolerance for risk, and crypto (tech) has a lot of risk.

Think about it... Steem blogging has not proven itself yet, its only 3 years old. Risk averse people dont rush into new endeavors, and this is new. Women being more risk averse, dont flood our blockchain... Yet.

You're right tho that more women would be a great thing. And the earning potential of blockchain social media is potentially a freeing force for females in inequal societies.

I think my feed has more publications written by women than men, but I guess it just happens to me. Maybe in crypto in general there are fewer women, but I also think that women are more susceptible to writing things, something for which Steemit is ideal.

Steem doesn't really need males or females. We just need "the average people". We need the instagram, facebook and twitter users. Gender doesn't matter. Also, Steem has tons of females, probably more than you think, and many of them are doing epic things to grow themselves and others at the same time.

"Since women lack the ability to earn money in many places, it puts them in a position of total dependence."

The same can be said about men. I personally don't know any whale-womans on Steem, but I know more than a handful of hard working womans who puts in tons of time and effort, just like I know dozens of men too.

When I brought friends, family and co-workers to Steem, both genders came... And both genders eventually gave up and left the platform. Much for the same reasons. The issues with recognition and rewards.

They didn't leave because Steem was "too technically advanced" for them... They gave up because Steem was messed up, and nothing about Steem was like they had heard and been promised before they joined. Those are the real issues we're facing. People give up because Steem is basically shit in comparision to what people promote it for.

And we should try to focus on who we are trying to reach too. Do we really want the masses or are people still going to ramble on about being a decentralised platform in an attempt to reach the underground anarchists?

Well, I give you one thing though. The highest paid article in the history of Steem was made by a girl. A makeup tutorial. She had boobs, but she eventually turned out to be a scammer as well.

Now the gossip in me is screaming that you didn't link this post. Lol!

Woah! That's nearly a year's wages for some, more for others!
Interestingly her intro posts were about bringing more women and none tech posts to Steem. My nosy side is coming out again now. How was she scamming?

I'm not entirely sure and I don't have all the details, but she basically collected a bunch of money from investors on Steem, because she was about to launch something, (can't remember what), and I mean a lot of money. Several thousands of Steem in total.

Long story short, she started to cash out. Her last and final transfer was made 8 months ago.

Along the same lines, most people online are not aware of the gender of one is she creates a profile that is rather neutral.

What are the statistics for Steem? What is the male-to-female ratio for our active user base?

Without first knowing that, your entire post and the arguments you make are quite meaningless. Nothing new, I guess.

I’ve tried to talk to friends to start blogging for cryptocurrency, but I find it’s a tough sell. They either think crypto is a scam, or think it’s just too good to be true.

I think many women are already here, it might be offensive for them to said that they're the second class of society which is not true. I won't say your idea is bad because this your opinion.

In my own opinion, no need for some boobs, we need some beauty.
