My Actifit Report Card: March 9 2025
This weekend has been superb for walking and today we headed down to Portsmouth, our first proper homage to the coast this year so far.
It was great! We love it down there and with t-shirt weather to boot, It was a delight.
Most of these photos were taken around Old Portsmouth.
There is a cafe embedded inside the old wall. It was once an empty space, somewhere I’ve got photos of how it looked before. It’s called Canteen and has been there since 2016. It was busy and very good. Handy having places to go to whenever we visit.
It was great to discover that the old fish market/wholesalers has had a bit of an upgrade. It’s got a nice shop front now. Open on Sundays. It never used to be.
I’ve got some video to edit, shot on the insta 360. You’ll get to see that soon.

It's been a while since we did any walking around Portsmouth. Your photos make it look much nicer than my memories of it. 😂
It used to be an absolute dive. Parts of it still are! However old Portsmouth, Gunwharf, Southsea have all seen significant investment over the past twenty years I’d say. It’s a lot smarter, actually quite a desirable place and as such property prices have skyrocketed.
Someone I used to work with bought a house in what used to be a rough area and a month later doubled in price. Sold it. Then bought a much nicer house in old Portsmouth with the profits.
You could say he was jammy. He certainly had it sussed.
We've had the opposite experience of property in Portsmouth. Struggling to sell a flat there.
I stayed in Southsea a couple of years ago though and was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it was there - for the most part!
Gunwarth is not my thing although my daughter regularly goes there for a day out treat. 😁
It was probably the 90s when this guy took advantage of the property boom, wasn't recent. I think a lot of places are both nice and not these days, it's the way it's going with this country.
My wife popped into Gunwharf and I went on a photowalk along the seafront. Normally I'll go into GW too but yesterday, I was happier to play with the Insta360.

Ah Portsmouth! I've been there a few times.. drank a lot of coffee there too :). Awesome photos and perfect weather for this.
There's an identical building like this in London near Canary Wharf. I wonder if it's the same architect/company or just a coincidence.

That’s an interesting question, I think that’s the one we’ve nicknamed, my wife and I, the lipstick building because of its cylindrical shape.
Great photo. I love that little marina and I should have kept photos of it catalogued over time, to chart the changes as they’ve been subtle… or have they?
