Can cycling help my zone 2 run base?: December 14 2024

Can cycling help build my zone 2 running base?

I have always liked a bit of cross training as it seems to give my legs a bit of a rest from all the impact of running, especially when I was working full time as a tradesman.

I don't think it could ever take the place of actually running completely if you want to be fit, but I am sure it helps, especially after watching Rich Rolls podcast with David Roche.

Dave Roach recently set a new course record for the Leadville 100 miler running event. Previously, Dave had just been a short 50-kilometre course specialist and a high-level coach but has now successfully added the longer stuff as well.

He has a different training approach to most of the ultra runners I have watched. He focuses more on speed. He reckons his body just can't handle all the huge miles that others do.

He talked of focusing on getting his zone 2 heart rate pace as fast as possible and cycling not to overload his body but maintain a high level of fitness.

It all makes total sense to me. Your heart and lungs do not really know the difference between different forms of exercise. It’s all just work.

I am going to try and add a bit more cycling to my weekly workouts and see how it goes.

Hi. I'm sure it is. I try to incorporate at least the elliptical trainer occasionally. I can easily keep zone 2 in there and save my legs. Then again, I miss the miles to Strava 🙂 but I believe it's worth it.

You have a nice bike :)
I think riding helps to improve the running performance
Last year, I did regular riding and I found my running pace was better
