My Actifit Report Card: July 15 2023

Hey Actifitters,

Saturday started rainy until mid-afternoon. I didn't mind of course, because that's when I sleep! And I got up even later than usual, as I really needed some rest. I finished my breakfast when most people in Florida probably had finished their dinner! The good thing is that by that time the weather had cleared up really nicely and we started our usual walk with Kaia in the forest.

As always, as soon as we were on the trails, I unleashed Kaia, so she can explore and do her business. A few seconds later, she was just a few meters from this big buck. It's a miracle she didn't see it, or caught its scent. She just came back and I quickly put the leash back for a few more minutes. That deer didn't move at all, and it's a very good thing.

After we went further in the forest, I could take off the leash again and we continued our walk.

There were more signs of Kaia not being herself these days. She lied down several times without me asking, that is very unusual.

We didn't stop our walk but slowed down a bit. That gave me more time to observe the local flora. In addition to all the mushrooms I mentioned the past few days, I saw many of these white things. Not sure what they are, I don't remember seeing them the other years. Right now, they are all over the forest.

It must have been rest day for the deer, because we saw a few more just chilling. I didn't want to bother them, so I kept Kaia close.

As often when we have plenty of time, we walked most of the trails of our little forest.

I had planned a much longer walk, with a long detour in the neighborhood and of course the sunset at the end. But seeing how Kaia was behaving, I decided to head back home so she could rest. We have an appointment at the vet on Monday, hopefully they'll figure out what's really going on this time. I had time to go for a run myself, but once again I got lazy and that was the end of the day's activities.

As usual, lovely pics!

In answer to the white mushrooms; they are called Indian Ghost Pipes and grow only if the conditions are correct for them. They usually grow near elm or alder trees. Check back next year and see if they are back. Sometimes they may miss a season as the conditions aren't correct for their growth. We have them in my forests here and if I'm lucky, they come back more often than not. Sometimes, the size of the colony increases as well. They are truly amazing and beautiful!

Thanks for the explanation. I really don't think I've seen them in the past, but thanks to the name you mentioned, I was able to research it a bit, and it seems they last only about a week. So I could have easily missed them. However, this year, there are so many in the forest, that'd be hard to miss them. They are indeed beautiful!

Thanks! Yeah, in short, today's visit to the vet was fairly reassuring. Probably just a really bad case of skin infection. Treatable with more antibiotics and a course of steroids to jump-start the healing if I understood correctly. Let's see how it goes.

Thanks! I hope so too, and the vet seemed pretty confident it wasn't too serious, so fingers crossed 🤞 Yeah, no idea how she missed that deer!
Thanks also for the plants info, there were a couple comments about it before, and I quickly searched it, it seems pretty incredible indeed. Beautiful for sure!
