Fun with yardwork: October 26 2024

avatar

I spent most of my Saturday outdoors — first working in my own yard, and then later in the day helping my sister with some of her projects.

My project was leaf raking. I have an absolutely enormous front yard. My daughter and I got most of it raked into piles, and then about half of it bagged up before we both had to go on to other things.

For the record, she is very silly!

The next few pictures should give you a pretty good idea of the volume of leaves we had to rake up.

Here’s a before and after picture of my porch steps.

After that three hour project, it was time to head to my sister’s house. We meet monthly with our “House Girls” group, which is a group of four good friends who take turns helping one another with home projects.

The projects range from gardening to cleaning to painting and organizing. We’ve been meeting for years, and it’s so much fun.

Today’s project involved collecting, cleaning and processing all of the collard greens, Swiss chard and kale from my sister’s enormous garden.

This picture is from the height of summer, where you can see how successful she is as a gardener.

Once autumn hits, our gardens decline fast, here in Minnesota. Everything in the garden turns yellow and brown, and we have to harvest any remaining vegetables and clear out the rest.

We washed all the kale, collard greens and Swiss chard, removed the spines, and then cut the leaves up and bagged them in plastic bags for the freezer.

And here was the product of our work
— bags of greens!

We also did some other projects like cleaning the old vines off this trellis.

Thanks for stopping g by!

That looks like a very productive day, but fun though! Your daughter silly? I can appreciate that. Life's too serious without being silly at times. I have 4 of those silly ones hehe. Loved reading about your day. I like how it all came together in your yard and your sister's house.

Some silliness can really make a day feel like a great day... especially when hard work is involved! Thanks so much for checking out my post, @misslasvegas.

Wow. That’s a lot of leaves. Those look like some very good leaf scoopers. I just use the rake and 50% of the leaves miss the bag… now I just rake them into a big pile in the corner and let them turn into mulch that I add to the garden in the spring …. We have too many Sugar Maples… but they make great Maple syrup too.

Leaf scoopers make all the difference! But you're smart to just mulch them, @offgridlife. They do break break down nicely. My problem is I have so many trees that they produce far more than the compost area can handle. Fortunately, we can deal with some of them that way, and we have a leaf drop off area nearby, and they mulch them there. Lots of options!
