My Actifit Report Card: November 7 2024

Hello everyone! Wednesday evening, after work, @altheana and I set out on the road, covering about 300 km to reach our land where our cabin is located. We were expecting our wood stove to be delivered on Thursday (yesterday).

At 6:30 pm, we hit the road, choosing to take the small roads instead of the highway to save on fuel. Our car consumes much less on these roads than on the highway. Plus, it saved us the toll fees, as that highway would have cost us 42€.

Once we arrived, we had dinner at my aunt's place, who lives not far from our cabin. It was already 11 pm by then.

The next morning, the delivery driver texted us to check if we were home, as they would need help unloading the stove, which weighs a hefty 80 kg.

Around 4 pm, the delivery driver, a woman, finally arrived in a small van, which surprised me. I expected her to at least have a truck equipped for handling heavy loads, but that wasn’t the case. She explained that her boss had simply told her to "make do" with this big package.

So, we handled the unloading together. The stove was well-protected in a sturdy wooden crate:

On Wednesday, we had already received the other parts of the stove (the pipes and some extra panels). Thankfully, my aunt was there to receive them. Everything was supposed to arrive the same day, but these packages arrived early:

We haven’t unpacked anything yet, as we’ll first need to transport the stove down to our land using my aunt's tractor. It’s much easier to move everything while it’s still packed.

On our side, we needed to return to Normandy, to @altheana’s parents’ place, as they were taking care of our cat during this short trip.

Before heading back, we took a quick detour down to our land to check that everything was still in place. With October's rains and storms, and the fact that our land is in a flood-prone area, we wanted to ensure nothing had shifted:

The grass has grown tall, the pond water level is high, and the boat is filled with water. Other than that, everything is fine. Inside the cabin, all is well too.

We were mostly concerned about mice, but there were no signs of them. The only minor issue we noted was a bit of mold on the kitchen counter. Given the ambient humidity, that’s not too surprising. Once the stove is installed, that should hopefully be resolve... or at least, we hope so!

I spent a few months living in a converted van, traveling across my country, France, and Spain.

Soon enough, I felt the need for more stability. I love this lifestyle, but mainly for short to medium periods (a few weeks to a couple of months).

Near my aunt's place, the person selling a piece of land was careful about whom to sell it to. He trusted us, so he decided to sell it to us.

To make the place habitable, there is an enormous amount of challenging work to be done, which can feel quite discouraging, especially since our professional commitments are taking up so much of our time these days. We’re self-employed, so if we don’t work, we don’t earn the money we need for the renovations. But if we work, it brings in new projects and more income, yet even less time. It’s the big game of life!

I’ve never really thought about the deeper reason that drove us to buy this land and cabin. I say "us" because I bought it with my partner. But I believe it will play a key role in our lives. Maybe we won’t live here full-time; maybe we’ll only use it for a while. But the place is so peaceful that we have absolutely no regrets about this purchase!

I'm even lazier, thinking of just using a hose to siphon out the water, haha. To flip the boat, I’d actually have to get in the water, and there’s about a meter of silt where I’ve already gotten stuck a few times.

Thanks for your comment, and thanks for taking the time to read!

lt's still going to be great if you used a hose to siphon the water,
