Wood shingles & Actifit November 8 2024

avatar

When's the last time you saw someone use wooden shingles to cover a roof? In this part of the world, they were heavily used, especially before tin and asbestos sheets became available, probably mainly because we have/had lots of forests everywhere, and wood was easily accessible. Nowadays, they're still used, but mostly to renovate or replace old roofs while preserving the original appearance of the building. And they're all still made by hand, with the main tool being a double-handed knife, though I don't know the English name for it.

Wood shingles look beautiful, in Colorado our house had cedar shingles. They are very durable.
Not extremely common, but still use over here as well !

Here most of them are made from "light wood", like fir, but the shingles are treated/painted every few years with a tar like substance, not sure about the english term, it might be HFO oil and they can last for decades.

Wood shingles are also very windproof very adorable very beautiful!😊
The only reason some people are shying away is because they’re not fireproof….🤔

We had a home in Colorado, with a cedar shake roof. It was really beautiful and durable and virtually maintenance free. Here where we are now; it would probably be problematic because of all the moisture. Nonetheless, there is a certain charm and nostalgia to them and a beauty not surpassed by the more modern components of roofing materials.

Thanks for sharing!
