Big walk down to Apple Tree Bay : April 8 2025

avatar

Carpet layers came in a little after 8 am. One room to do. That had me moving early. They were done by 10 am. Took an early lunch sobI could get out walking. Caught a train to Mt Ku-ring Gai to walk down to Apple Tree Bay

A little taken aback seeing this diamond python curled up in the sun - on a front verge - not in the bush

Plan to walk all the way down to the water - autumn orchids are down there. A few banksia flowering along the way

NSW coral heath flower - white form

Pine-leafed geebung

Could smell something sweetish - not the wallabies - maybe these. Did get close to smell - ID is woollsia pungens - well named

A few hibbertia

A few pea flowers too

Banksia a bit further into flowering - leaf is similar to the one before

Reaching the edge of the escarpment - stormy to the south. Did have an umbrella

Pink grevillea on the way down

Acianthus orchid leaves on the edge of the rainforest

Budding form - nothing further advanced - buds only

Did know an orchid site - flowering cestichis reflexa - Tom cats orchid

Made it down to the track that runs along Apple Tree Bay - took an hour for one orchid flowering and one budding. The track along the creek is a good source of autumn and winter orchids. Not been able to walk along the creek since the heavy rains 4 years ago

There are signs - greenhood rosette

Puffer mushroom

A different greenhood - going to guess pterostylis nutans

The bad news is the track is still closed. Was hoping I could walk in from the lower car park. Might have to get a kayak and walk in the sections accessible by boat. Not going to walk an hour

Did climb over the back of the rocks where the tom cats orchids were. Was not game to get as close as last time - overnight rain made the rock and moss slippery

Did spy a rock orchid cluster on the same rock - just to the right of the purple flower. Amazing what one finds on looking

Woolly mushroom

Pink form of epacris pulchella

Interesting mushroom form - big stalk and small canopy

A few lambertia formosa still flowering

More banksia form - also with the pine type leaf

Election time is here. Someone has chosen to label this poster - not an Independent but a Teal. Normally ignore this but a friend lives here and has been spruiking her

One of the new Newcastle trains came by. Big walk - train trip home was horrible - the school boys have no manners

Extra steps done putting out the old carpet for council clean up tomorrow

Dinner prep - make a roux and bechemel for macaroni cheese

Layered in to cooked pasta

Bake for 20 minutes - yum

I was not that close - the sun was warm and it was curled up tight - I did warn the jogger who was coming up the other way. When I got back and the school kids were coming down from the station, it had moved on

Wow
That’s scary
Are you people allowed to kill snakes over there?
