Windy day ride and walk to Comerong Island : October 6 2024
Wind built all day with gusts up to 60 kmh. Made for a different plan for the day - take a rest day with a shirt ride and a walk somewhere where the big wind would be less of a factor. Cycled down to the river to walk across to Comerong Island
Pig face in the dunes
View back to Coolangatta Mountain into the big wind
View across the wind shows the waves being generated in the wind
Surprised to find a banksia flowering
Onto the open beach in the wind - view north to Gerroa
And south to Orient Point
Pretty windy to get flower photos but did capture the leptospermum squarrosum in a still moment
Someone has taken time to create a heart shape in shells - will get washed apart in the next high tide
A few different angles of Coolangatta Mountain each one taken a few hundred metres south
And a stepped back view of the Southern Highlands
Woodhill Mountain is the table top on the left
Onto Comerong Island to see if there were any orchids - these were only a few flowers showing. The rest are all dried out
Mushroom time
Signs at the entrance to the track that goes down to the Crookhaven River. On a day of 29 kmh winds with gusts to 60 kmh, I know which one I am thinking about
Golden skink made a noise and then posed for the photo
A few of these grand eucalyptus trees. Wide trunk. Thick red bark. Tree seems to lose trunk elements about 10 metres up and then branches sideway. This photo also shows the ability to survive even when the centre is hollowed out by fire and ants
Wooden fungus action - like and old fashioned spinning top
Took the track down to the beach to avoid walking around the bird nesting area - photo southwards to Point Perpendicular
Watched the sea birds fishing just behind the breakers - hundreds of birds diving in and out. Saw no signs of dolphins.
The ride was short but the walk was 3 times longer.
Dinner suggestion - chicken satay stir fry - chose to make it from scratch
Chopped veges - chilli, garlic, spring onion, leek, capsicum, carrot
Brown the chopped chicken - I prefer thighs for this as they do not dry out
Stir fry the veges - carrot went in last - want some crunch
Add in the spices dry to release the flavours - ratios: 1/2 white pepper, 1 cumin, 2 coriander, 1 turmeric, 2 garam masala
Add in coconut milk or cream - half a can to start. Then melt in peanut butter - I prefer crunchy
Taste for seasoning - did not do that well enough - dish needed more chilli. Keep the sauce simmering - add more water if there is a risk of pot sticking
Serve with rice
