The Day My Garden Became My Personal Trainer

Today, for the first time in a while, I didn’t lace up for a walk. No scenic trail, no city streets, not even a lazy stroll to the corner store. Instead, I found myself deep in the trenches — literally — working in the garden.

I figured, “How much could this really count?”

Turns out? A LOT.

At the end of the day, I looked at my step counter: 5100 steps. Five thousand steps… without leaving my property. Without walking loops. Without even trying!

There’s something wild about realizing that raking leaves, carrying soil bags, dodging aggressive garden spiders, and chasing runaway flowerpots can outpace a casual 5K stroll.

It’s a good reminder that “fitness” doesn’t have to look like what Instagram or your gym membership thinks it should. Sometimes it looks like dirt under your nails, sore arms, and a whole lot of very confused chickens (long story).

So if you’re feeling stuck, know this: movement is movement.
Nature’s gym is open 24/7, free of charge — and sometimes it even smells like fresh-cut grass.

Nice, garden walking! Congratulations on your unexpected 5K+ steps, brother, that's pretty sweet! I've always far preferred exercise through work and just doing what I do normally, even though I've very much appreciated that when I did it regularly too, especially when I was in capoeira. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Of course you did Capoeira! :-D lol, it's a Martial Art that I never tried myself unfortunately, but I have been doing several different ones myself, Hapkido mostly and longest :-)

Haha...indeed, I trained capoeira for 3 1/2 years, 3 days per week, and I was in the best shape of my life, 185 pounds of lean, solid, flexible muscle! Capoeira is incredible, and I haven't trained in years, so I miss it. Hapkido is brilliant! I never tried it, but I was always fascinated with it! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Same here, trained Hapikdo 3 to even 5 days a week, for a little under 5 years (not always as intense). Lean, mean muscly fighting machine :-D
And miss it! Hapkido is brilliant indeed! But you need a really good trainer, not just one who is all about ego and fights.
