Afternoon Run - 5km (sunshine and a brief review of 2024)

@dannewton just finished a 5.71km run, that lasted for 37 minutes.
This run helped dannewton burn 485.0 calories.

Description from Strava: Look at that sunshine!

Er.. well technically I didn't actually run in the sunshine, as I didn't manage to go for a run until after work, when the sun had already set. But I did enjoy looking out of the window at the blue sky, instead of the dreary fog we've had for the past 3 days

Work was a easy day today, mostly because I spend the bulk of my time working with external suppliers, and during this lull between Xmas and new year, many companies shut completely. As there wasn't a great deal to do (I spent most of the afternoon 'looking busy'), I logged off sharp at 4pm. As the day had been dry, I decided to go out for a run, which in itself is a rarity these days!

Instead of the usual bypass route, I changed it up and ran a loop around the village, and was an easyish 5km effort which took just over 35 minutes.

As its the 30th of December today, and I don't plan to go out tomorrow, todays run marks the last run of 2024. So I suppose its time for a quick review of my year. I had managed to run just over 2,600km this year, which sounds pretty good, but is a long way from my 'goal'

image.png

At the start of this year I had initially aimed for 3,500km in total for 2024, and to begin with I was easily managing to keep up with that. My training then became a little disjointed around March (mostly due to my mum passing away) and I got distracted by trying to sort things out and come to terms with it.

In the Summer I realized that the 3,500 goal was no longer feasible, and instead revised it down to 3,000km so it would be somewhat more manageable. I ran approximately 1,960km in 2023, so to do 3,000 would still be a worthwhile achievement. All throughout Summer and Autumn I kept pace with my target, until disaster struck in November, when an annoying hip injury came out of nowhere.

I was forced to back right off from my training to help rest it, while I investigated with a physio on how to solve it. You can see this in the graph below, I was in touch with the target all year until November, and then it all fell apart

Screenshot_20241230-174024_Strava.jpg

Some more detail can be seen in the next graph...

image.png

The above shows how much I ran in each week, and shows how consistent I was at the start of the year, and how 'broken' my training was over the summer, and the collapse in November

It was still 600km further than I ran in 2023, but considering how well I was doing at the start of the year, that 'achievement' feels a little hollow... a little disappointing.

In the next couple of weeks I am going to do a more in-depth review on how my training went, and then it will be time to set some goals for the coming year 2025. I do have some races booked, and there will still be more to book. I also need on decide on my running distance goal, but it is likely to be 3,000km for '25. And finally I hope to more consistent and less injured next year, as my overall feeling for this year is a 'disappointing'

Heres to next year I guess!!

How about you, dear reader? How did your training go this year, and what would you like to achieve in 2025?

Wow, 2600km is nothing to be disappointed with! That's a brilliant effort for the year - well done.

I also had an injury riddled year and was disappointed with 1100km as my target was 2024km. (Silly I know). Next year's target is 2500km, but that was a bit of bravado over Christmas talking with my son. - I guess I'll never learn.

I hope you achieve your targets next year, and thank you for your blogs this year. I don't interact much but I do enjoy reading your updates.

Thanks, it is a reasonable distance I guess, sometimes I forget who I compare myself to... some of the people on strava/youtube post stats that are way above what I'm capable of. When I compare myself to the general population, my numbers seem a little more impressive.

And I do need to remember to compare myself to 4 years ago when my running was pretty much non-existent... I'm doing pretty well these days considering

I guess the disappointment is just due to the current situation... I found my New Years Day post from 1st of January 2024 HERE, and I'm just in a completely different place 12 months later. Back then I had the distance, the pace, the CONSISTENCY, everything felt better than I do right now, and it feels disheartening to have gone backwards.

I also know I'm not alone with injuries, and I know you've had to struggle with a couple of them this year... its hard to keep positive after setbacks, but we've gotta try I guess!

You look like you're at least finishing the year strongly... and hey, 2,500 is definitely well within your means.

Challenges are meant to be 'challenging' right? Its no fun if its too easy!

I hope you achieve your targets next year, and thank you for your blogs this year. I don't interact much but I do enjoy reading your updates.

Thats very kind of you to say. I mostly write for my own benefit, but its nice to hear I have a couple of regular readers here and there who enjoy what I write too :-)

Happy New Year Allan, wishing you a productive and healthy (and injury free) 2025!

My work shuts down over Xmas, so I've been taking it easy. My injury last month reduced my yearly distance, but it was not that great anyway. I will not even make 1000km, so yours looks great from here. I need to build it up gradually next year to avoid further issues.

Happy new year!

Lol its alright for some! To be honest, after working for so long in retail, the fact that my office closes for the bank holidays is enough for me, I still get time to enjoy the occasion

I know you've had that hip niggle for a while, but hurting your back hasn't helped. Pleased to see you are on the mend for that at least, and that it hasn't stopped you being reasonably active even if you weren't able to running as often as you wanted.

Happy New Year :-)

This can be a bit of a dead time as nothing much is going on. I'd rather take the time off when I can use it better.

I've tried to stay active, especially with all the extra eating going on. Hoping for a healthy 2025.
