Should You Do High Kick Or Low Kick?
Every martial art focuses on specific things and you might see some differences. Some martial arts give emphasis to kick higher above the waist.
In a fight, if you do high kicks and hit your opponent, you will get higher points. They determine the fighting system like this. So, fighters train and practice more to kick higher to get more points so that they become the winner.
Every fighting competition has rules what you can or cannot do. It highly influences how you practice martial arts and prepare yourself for the fight.
Maybe there are rules that all you have to do is to touch your opponent body with kicks, and you cannot hit harder. So in a fighting competition, you kick and touch your opponent body, that's it. You will get the point that will determine the winner.
Now if you train to touch your opponent with kick or punch, you get used to fighting like this. When you fight for self defense, you do the same that way you practice. You kick and as soon as it touches the attacker, you return.
When you fight to protect yourself, you do not want that. When you are being attacked, you might not get enough space to do high kicks. But you can do low kicks.
You can do low kicks in different situations and you can adapt it easily. The whole situation changes when it comes to fighting in order to survive. You will only think about what would be effective to defend yourself and get back home alive.
Your martial arts training highly influences how you make your move in any situation and protect yourself.
So is high kick useless for self defense?
High kick can be very useful for self defense and it depends on the situation and how you use it. You can do high kick from distance and hit the attacker. The attacker will not get a chance to come close to you.
You can follow the high and low principle. You strike low and then strike upper parts of the body. If the attacker steps forward, you can do low kicks to stop him. As a result, if the attacker moves backward, you can do high kicks and hit him.
When you do a high kick, after delivering the kick, get back your leg very fast. Otherwise, the attacker might catch your leg. You have to make you that the attacker cannot grab your leg when you do high kicks.
You can use both high kicks and low kicks for self defense based on the situation you are in. What do you think about high kicks and low kicks? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
