The Gap Is Widening

A team is only as good as the system put in place and spearheaded by the manager. When Cancelo switched to the left back role for Man City, he was unbelievable. His influence was so noticeable to the point that he nearly became City's most important player.

Despite playing as a full back, he dominated the left flank and played like an inverted winger more than a left full back. He was a joy to watch as he redefined the role of a left back in a working system. Then, for some inexplicable reasons his importance to the team seemingly got into his head. He goofed and was shown the exit.

Rico Lewis started playing the Cancelo role and wasn't as imperious as the Portuguese, but he was effective. Now, it's Gvardiol marshalling the left side of Man City and he's doing it with great aplomb while Cancelo has since moved twice. Simply put, Guardiola's system brought out the beast in Cancelo just like it's bringing out the attacking instinct in a natural central defender, Gvardiol.

Going! Going!! Gone!!!

Though it's not confirmed yet, all three clubs that were promoted from the Championship to the Premiership will be relegated this season. As a neutral, I had hoped one of Burnley or Luton will, at least, stay. Burnley looks an attractive proposition; Luton's barrel-to-barrel style of play makes them an entertaining watch.

However, both of them stayed in the race this long simply because of the points deduction Forest and Everton. If not, their relegation would've been confirmed a week earlier. This just shows the widening gap between the Premier League and the Championship. Generated revenue which allows for recruiting of talents favours the perennial EPL teams compared to the ones just coming from the Championship.

If this continues, maybe the FA should consider the MLS style of football where there is no promotion or relegation. Afterall, teams that are promoted are always the favorites to get relegated once again.

Sometimes the system is what makes a player work, sometimes the player is what makes a system work. We never really know who is making the other work until both are separated.
There are also instances where both player and system make each other work.

Obviously, Cancelo is an outrageously talented full back. However, Guardiola's system propelled his talent while hiding his flaws. Away from the Manchester side, he's not reached the dizzy height he once occupied.

I think you are right that teams that are promoted are always the favourites to get relegated again. Who can query who?
