SPORTS TALK SOCIAL: NEW YEAR means BETTER YEAR?
Hello community,
In the past few days I have been thinking about our community and what we could do to accelerate our growth.
Lately I've been trying to identify posts that in my opinion shouldn't be in our community or shouldn't be using our hashtag #sportstalk and I take these posts to our discoord to discuss what the community thinks.
However I have not had much feedback or adherence to this initiative and I start to think that I am the only one concerned with this and as I do not want to look like the crazy person who is trying to harm someone then I will do this.
In case this is raised by someone from the community I will be happy to help in the debate by giving my opinions.
What can we expect from our community in this new year?
Honestly, I don't know I've heard about DAO with Archon, but I think this is too big a step right now, on our discoord I don't see anyone discussing serious issues, SPORTS whales don't even post in the community or appear on discoord.
Sometimes I think that maybe there is no way to get around this but @cryptoandcoffee in your posts ends up bringing some kind of light to the end of the world.
I think this community could be one of the big communities in HIVE I think at the same level as LeoFinance but for that we will need to create a team style that until we have a DAO where we can ask the community what it wants to do. Incidentally, LeoFinance is a great example of that as it has no DAO but the project team can do things.
For this to happen and form a work team, it is necessary for @patrickulrich to have that desire and have a roadmap and a place where we can discuss the matter.
What are the current main problems today?
- The token being farmed by people outside the community, creating selling pressure;
- Lack of funds to be able to update our front end by calling users to use and with that we can try to get ads that will give sustainability to the community;
- Lack of a roadmap;
Initial lack of funds
I was researching and noticed that there is a Decentralized Hive Fund where you could try to create a proposal explaining all the objectives of that proposal and the duration of the proposal and maybe we could get the other users in the community to accept it.
Tokenomics
This is also an essential point for us to gradually start to relieve the pressure of selling our token and consequently start to be valued by those who own it.
Roadmap
Clearly, this is a fundamental point that should be defined even in order to be able to make the proposal for DHF.
My idea with this post is not to discourage anyone or even to make it appear that I am throwing the towel on the floor but rather to draw people attention and maybe start a team of people to be formed to discuss and start walking with things to forward.
I wish you all an excellent 2021 and a great year for our community.
Spam has been an issue for our community since the early days due to the value of the token encouraging users to do what they could to mint them. That being said I've always taken a pretty hands off approach to managing the community. My goal has been to make this project community focused versus delivering on my own desires. To bring those two ideas in line with one another I created a Referee system last year that was deployed through a couple amazing community devs. This system allowed the stakeholders of the community to elect 9 referees that were tasked with identifying posts that were outside the realm of the community. When a consensus of referees agreed by downvoting content within a timeframe a community account would downvote away any rewards based on an algorithm to manage that downvote power. Additionally referees could mute accounts from the community mute account to remove their access to earning rewards through another consensus process. When Hive forked the program was depreciated and we've never had it updated to make functional on Hive. That's something I think would be interesting to bring back. I will reach out to the dev who worked on it to see if I can get his code so we could adjust for Hive nodes and make any other changes needed.
You are correct about the coming DAO functionality. I've already contacted the ARCHON team and arranged for us to begin implementation as soon as their code deployment for proposals are ready. They just launched the first proposal in this system for their own tribe so it shouldn't be too long before we are able to add to issue our own proposals.
I think the DAO is one of the most important things that any tribe will be able to have. While tribes like LEO have shown that centralized teams are able to deploy features quickly I don't believe that is what's really needed to build a successful decentralized community for a long term. I tend to believe that stakeholder engagement is what's going to drive true success and empowering stakeholders to lead is a very powerful tool towards that end. Additionally by removing centralized development goals the tribe is able to move in multiple directions at the same time led by those who want to see a change the most.
I personally believe that LEO's success has been tied to the revenue they collected through 2019 through ad revenue and operations like LEODex. This sustained their price through 2019 while others dropped off when ads were not followed through by the Hive Engine team. While LEO was regularly buying from those revenue sources we were stuck watching the selling pressure on our token with no way other than investor interest to maintain. This created a negative feedback cycle where downward price led to less interest and less interest led to more downward price.
That's why I believe the most important need is addressing the tokenomics of the token by creating "sinks" to burn off tokens. The most obvious is addressing the lack of advertising funds coming in by either creating a system to sell advertising spots for SPORTS directly or finding an advertising partner that will fund us with at the very least BTC like we've seen LEO's success with Coinzilla. That's just the start though.
When the DAO is ready I will personally be interested in supporting proposals for other credible sinks. In the past we had a voting bot that allowed users to bid for an upvote from a Hive (Steem at the time) account with lots of HP. Additionally we paid a portion of daily inflation to those that delegated HP to the account. This was another great sink for us that allowed tokens to regularly be burnt for an actual use case. The more of these we have the more tokens will be removed from the market not to mention create actual needs for the token.
I personally delegated my SPORTS to a user who was developing a prediction market for SPORTS early on that burnt SPORTS to create submissions. I would love to see someone create a credible proposal that built out a sports gaming option or integrated with an existing site but used and burnt SPORTS for entries in some fashion. I think that would be a great fit and use case for our community and is only one that comes to mind from past experience.
I would also be more than willing to help with a proposal for the DHF though I'm not sure it will go very far. I've floated the idea to see if there was Hive support but it didn't seem to have it when I checked around. There was a largely shared belief at that time to not fund any tribes as that would essentially be draining the Hive fund to support select token holders. That may have changed now since were seeing more and more ridiculous proposals, in my humble opinion, being approved these days.
As for a roadmap I agree and is something I think I've failed at but by design in a way. I shied away from issuing one in the past due to the thought I would be flexing too much influence by founding the tribe and then issuing insights on what direction it would have to go. I've never wanted this idea to be about me but rather about sports and those in Hive that share that interest. That being said I think now that we'll have the ability to issue proposals and petitions it's time to issue a draft petition to gauge where the community at large thinks we need to have a roadmap towards and then issue it as a proposal for approval from the tribe at large. I think that will be a great thing to have accomplished very early in 2021 at the latest.
I can't thank you enough for sparking interest in designing where this goes especially now as were about to enter a time where these discussions are going to be needed. If there's one thing that will cause the DAO idea to fail is for the tribe stakeholders to not have enough interest to maintain enough quorum in voting for measures. Just knowing there's interest out there in seeing it done right helps encourage me this is the right direction to go.
On a side note did you get a chance to look at the Nitrous code for the site? In the instance we move to a full custom site it might not be the highest priority but one small change that would be cool to look at doing for our current condenser is adding support for @dbuzz new embedded share button on our site similar to what we have now for Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and LinkedIn.
I looked a little at Nitrous code but as I never touched it it seemed quite complex.
Maybe we have to look for someone who has already had contact with this to help me understand this.
I don't think so at the moment but in the future we should try to have our own interface without depending on others.
Thanks for the comment, this explains alot of the thoughts in the community. Sounds safe atleast to see that we have people working on improving the community and let's hope the referee system can comeback, think that's a necessity for not being used as a money drain.
Spam is a problem that has existed since the beginning of the community but we have to try to change that in some way because otherwise we will never be considered as a relevant community. Right now the only way to achieve this is for members who are active in our community and who believe in the project to unite and make people stop spamming and making SPORTS just in order to sell it.
I am also in favor of decentralization but if we look at most of the crypto projects they all start centralized and only when they reach a certain maturity do they begin to be decentralized and at this moment our project is not at that point to think about having everything decentralized .
Currently, I think we should create a team to take the project by the horns and try to make it go ahead and we start to earn our space.
The proposal for DHF is an attempt to obtain some trust so that we can even look for programmers who have more free time to advance the project, search for new users who create good sports content that are on other platforms and define the direction of this community. The cost for submitting a proposal to DHF is something like 70 HBD, does the community account not have these funds? In case the proposal is not accepted, at least we show that the community is working to rise and succeed in becoming a relevant community in Hive and crypto space.
Whatever depends on me can count on me for discussions and to make decisions to start trying to grow our community.

Do not miss the last post from @hivebuzz:
You know I am in and want change to happen and together we can do this. I agree a team is need and the time for talk is over. We do need more people to step up to see this through. Personally I believe the front end needs to change and we move from there. I am no developer and don't even know what is possible, but believe anything would be better than what we currently have. I think moving forward DM me on discord and lets get this thing moving plus I will rope in others who can help inside and outside our community.
Yes, I think we need to start to update the front end. I started to look at Nitrous code but since I never had contact with it I am lost.
Perhaps it would be interesting to see if someone from the community or outside and who has already had contact with this can help us.
I think there is at least one more topic that we have to start there that is the SPORTS farm by people who do not create content in our community and that the post is not even related to sport.
I will be on hand to join the discussion team and try to help make the best decisions for the growth of our community.
Have some ideas and need to chat with you on discord.
I am available to have a good chat about ideas for our community
@patrickulrich needs to help get someone as there must be someone who could guide us from here.
