What About e-sports?

I've been watching Olympic Games ever since I was a kid and I guess I'll be always watching it as it's an ancient event that takes place every four years and only the top athletes get to participate. Some of them are lucky and can participate more times, others only once and some never as they are not good enough.

The Ancient Olympic Games were religious and athletic festivals held every four years at the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, Greece. Competition was among representatives of several city-states and kingdoms of Ancient Greece. These Games featured mainly athletic but also combat sports such as wrestling and the pankration, horse and chariot racing events. source

This was the ancient version of the games. Since then things have changed, many new sports have been accepted and the process is not over, each new edition brings us something new. This is totally fine as life is changing, new sports are surfacing all the time and don't see any reason not to include them. Change is welcome as watching the same sports every time would be pretty boring.

However, there are limits that shouldn't be crossed. No matter how different sport is nowadays, I believe the main profile should be the same, sport should always be sport.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, sport is:

  • a game, competition, or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job:
Football, basketball, and hockey are all team sports.
  • all types of physical activity that people do to keep healthy or for enjoyment source

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is responsible for deciding which new sport is accepted.

In August 2017, the organizing committee announced that it would hold talks with the IOC and professional esports organizations about the possibility of introducing competitive video gaming to the 2024 games. However, in July 2018, the IOC confirmed that it would not consider esports for the 2024 Olympics. source

e-sport is relatively new and has a large audience among the younger generation. Almost all of them love video games and some are even addicted to them. As far as the audience is concerned, video games at the Olympics would be interesting for the younger generation and I bet there would be plenty to visit the event.

However, I don't believe e-sports would fit into the Olympic Games. I think it has nothing to do with the original concept. It's not a sport, never will be, no matter how popular e-sports are. We should keep the old tradition going and not make something else out of it.

In my humble opinion it should be held separately under a different name and I hope it's going to happen.

This is a controversial topic, so feel free to add your comment, let's see what do you think.

I am a gamer. I appreciate the competitive platform and see the value of evolving and appealing to a younger generation as essential to survival of an event.

That being said, there is no reason esports should be included in olympics. To me, it was like when hockey was gone for a year due to a players strike and they filled the gab on Canadian sports television with poker. I like poker but wth was poker shown as a sport?!?

Maybe they will put poker in the olympics too?

Yeah...

Being a gamer for almost 25 years I wouldn't be surprised if someday they arrive to the Olympic Games.

The true spirit and tradition of the Olympics are no more than a fantasy, these days these kind of events are about politics positions and bussines.

Let's take China's swimmer Sun Yang as an example. He's accused of being under doping practices, but China and the FIBA have refused it. The thing has escalated to his rivals don't even wanting to share the podium and being about fighting each other.

How much of that is politics and bussines?

People seeing that is disappointing and that's were esports might appear trying to appeal more younger generations at a more leveled field.

Greetings from Mexico.

I'm gonna agree with you on this one. E-sports should be categorized differently. Best regards.
