The Way You Train vs The Way You Fight

Do you learn martial arts?
Or, do you see martial training?

If you learn martial arts or see students learning martial arts, you might have some questions in your mind. When they train, they practice different things. Usually, the way you train, you fight the same way. But if you see them fighting, you might see it is not exactly the same they are fighting as they are training.

So is there any difference between the way you train and the way you fight?

When you learn martial arts, you have to learn the basics first. That's the foundation. For example, when you learn how to punch or kick and parry, you usually stand in a wide stance. And you practice those moves in that stance as a beginner. But when you fight, you are not in a wide stance, you are in a fighting stance.

You have to do exercises to be stronger. Sometimes you do such things that are only for training. It will help to strengthen your muscles, your leg and you can absorb the opponent strike. You practice those things to be stronger that will help you in a fight. For example, if someone kicks you and you cannot take the kick, get hurt and fall on the ground, that will not be good for you.

So you do exercises to make your legs strong. You might lower your stance only to practice. When you fight in a real life situation, you are not going to stand like that. You will stand and make the move that is effective to defend yourself. You will not show them that this is how you practice, so you stand like that and you will keep fighting that way. That's ridiculous.

That's why sometimes you might see there are some differences between the way you train and the way you fight. But most of the cases, you train the same way you fight. The more you understand the reality and what would be possible in a real life situation, the better you will be to defend yourself.
