Move Forward vs Move Backward For Self Defense
Understanding the distance between you and your opponent is very important. You can punch, kick and strike perfectly, but whether it will work or not, it depends on the distance.
You can be good at striking. But you might find it difficult to have an impact on attackers if you do not know how to move forward and backward. When you kick and you want to hit your opponent, you have to be in the kicking range. If you stay far way, you cannot hit the opponent.
You should be in the punching range when you punch. If you are so close to your opponent, you can do elbow strike, knee charge, hammer fist and so on. From a kicking range, elbow strike will not work. You have to close the gap before doing an elbow strike. If you are too close to your opponent, you can step back and strike.
So what should you do in a fight for self defense? Should you move forward or move backward?
If someone attacks you, your natural reaction is to move backward and save yourself. If you want to defend the attack, you should move forward and defend that. You can move backward but it will give the attacker another chance to attack you. So in order to stop the attacker, you have to get in and block the strike with a strong defense.
Again the distance between you and your opponent matters when it comes to defending any attack. The distance can determine the effectiveness of your move. If your intention is to run away, move backward and run. If you want to face the situation and sometimes you have no choice, you have to step forward and make your move.
