Defending Kicks and Counter Attack - Self Defense
So you know how to kick. Do you know how to defend a kick and counter-attack?
You can kick your opponent. And your opponent can do the same. When you are in a punching range, you usually expect punches, palm strike and if you are so close, you can expect elbow strike, knee charge, hammer fist or getting hit on your foot that I talked in my previous post.
To defend a kick, you can use your hands or you can use your legs. When you and your opponent in a kicking range, you can expect that your opponent is going to kick you unless you step forward for different attacks.
In order to block a front kick, you can do sweep parry and get in for counter-attack. After defending the kick, what you are going to do, it is up to you. If you want to make your opponent falls down on the ground, you can sweep his leg. When you sweep his leg, you can also use your hand to push.
You can catch your opponent's leg while he is doing front kick. You can move to the side and catch his leg and then counter-attack. However, if you are opponent is very fast, it is difficult to catch his leg. So do not go for catching the leg always. Your opponent movement, strike, and speed gives you an indication of what you can do.
We are talking about defending kicks. When your opponent kicks you, you can strike or hit his leg as a defense. Instead of doing block or parry, you can go for the strike to his leg. It is going to be painful. You are defending and attack with one strike.
If you are a beginner, first learn basic parry and blocks. Then you can use those parry and blocks to defend kicks. When you are good at doing blocks and parry, ask your training partner to kick. And you can use the parry and block to defend that. At the time of defending the kick, you feel the force. And you will know how it feels like defending a kick.
