Best vs Competitive- Is there a difference?

It’s Christmas and while you’re enjoying and making merry, leave some of the enjoyment for tomorrow when the English premier league returns.😁

Arsenal are on top of the league which most of us didn’t think was possible at the start of the season but it’s very well deserved. City are 5 points behind who play the ever entertaining Leeds United on Wednesday. Let’s see if it’ll be an easy 3 points or Leeds can help Arsenal’s course.

The premier league has become probably the most watched league in the world. If it isn’t, it’s certainly the most talked about. It’s not a surprise after investing so much into the league. The premier league teams have so much to spend and it’s shown in their spending every summer.

A common theme that has been used a lot is “the premier league is the best in the world. A statement that certainly draws so much argument whenever uttered especially to the fans of the Spanish league.

I’m a Chelsea fan and so naturally I should be excited when they call the premier league the best in the world. I can’t help but disagree to some degree. I don’t know if “best” is the right term to use. For me the word should be competitive. 🤔

The premier league for me is the most entertaining and certainly the most competitive largely because there are a lot of good or big teams. We have the best managers.

I think sometimes that competitiveness is misunderstood as being best. I mean the English teams are good but are they any better than the best teams in La Liga, Bundesliga, Seria A and Ligue A?

Who isn’t afraid to play Real Madrid? No one’s wants to play Bayern😅 and no one will be extremely happy to get paired with PSG.

As far as I am concerned the very best should be dominating both domestically and in Europe. Real Madrid have been able to do it on a consistent basis. Barcelona used to do it but have fallen off.

Even when Manchester United were on top during the Ferguson Era they amassed so much domestically but have only managed 3 champions league trophies. Arsenal did well in the league when Arden Wenger was in charge but did little to nothing in Europe. It was during that time they had the ”invisibles” in the English league.

Liverpool have done well recently and have been to a number of champions league finals under Klopp but have managed to win one.

Chelsea for the better part of the last century were the best team in Europe which the Ballandor awards acknowledged in 2021. In that decade Chelsea won both domestically and in Europe and even went on to win the club World Cup and super league. We’ve fallen off since then and it’s not clear if we can make champions league qualification next season. But I think we’ll be back soon. 🤞

When we talk about best I think a lot of people agree that Real Madrid are the best team in the world even if we do not want to. They’ve been consistent and have won as many as 14 champions league trophies. They’ll have to not win consecutively for about 6 years or more before any team can match that. That’s my definition of being best.

These days we hear people calling Manchester city the best team in the world. For all their domestic success they don’t have a champions league trophy to write their name in history and have been to the finals just once. Can you be the best for just being a local champion? I doubt it. 👀

Bayern are playing in a not very challenging league. I mean they’re miles ahead of everyone else and maybe Dortmund and Leipzig are the closest to them but then they prove that they’re a very good team in Europe. The 8-1 thumping of Barcelona will be one for the history books that’ll never be forgotten.

They play in a “farmers league” but then they beat the best teams in Europe.

Is there really a way to measure which team is the best league in the world? I’m not sure about that but then if I had to describe the premier league I wouldn’t use the word best. I’d use “ competitive” and ”most entertaining“ although City are trying so hard to turn it into their farmers league. But is the level of competition and entertainment enough for us to label the epl as the best? 🤷🏾‍♂️

I’d really like to know what you guys think about the premier league being described as the best league. Do you agree? Let’s get interactive.

Thank you.

I actually covered some of that in my Premier League x Farmers League post. Farmers league have got to be the worst thing a sports fan could ever say. The moment someone says it, I don't consider them a serious fan.

I still label the Premier League as the best, but people pretending like the rest are so far behind are just blind.

Oh okay. I’ll check that post out. I don’t know why people say that. The best players are even from those so called farmers league.

The rest aren’t so far behind. Just the level of entertainment is very different. Maybe the media has a part to play in that too.

Understand what you mean if you are the best you should be able to do it outside your comfort zone. But what I think or understand when they say premier league is the best league is, they take into consideration of certain factors like how many people watch it, the value of its trophy compared to other leagues, it’s competitiveness and others.

And if you compare these factors to the other leagues the is no doubt that premier league is the best league. I don’t think because the teams don’t perform outside Europe is a factor to be considered.

Okay point taken and you do make valid points but then I think sometimes it’s overhyped. The other leagues aren’t too bad themselves.

For me, it's recently I began to watch league matches and premier league happens to be the one I'm very much acquainted with... that's because it's the most talked about and most shown

Yeah it’s the most talked about and shown. I think the investment that the owners and investors have thrown into the league is also a factor.
