My Actifit Report Card: December 1 2022
On 1st December 1789, a French doctor called Joseph Guillotin presented to the French authorities a new invention, a machine designed and manufactured as a method of executing prisoners condemned to death. In honour of its creator, this device was christened the guillotine and consisted of a slanted blade that the executioner dropped with great speed and force on the neck of the prisoner, who was decapitated, providing an extremely rapid death without suffering. This method of execution was used mainly in France and other European countries until well into the 20th century.
Under the blades of the guillotine all kinds of people died, from poor peasants to royalty without distinction. Executions especially during the 13th and 19th centuries were public.
