Sedna the Dwarf Planet - My Actifit Report Card: November 14 2022
On 14 November 2003 a strange object was discovered in our Solar System and named "Sedna".
Smaller than Pluto, it is three times further away from the Sun than the latter, so astronomers believe that it could be in the so-called Oort Cloud, the most remote part of the Solar System, which is supposed to be the origin of most of the comets that visit us.
It would apparently have a highly elliptical orbit and would take more than 10,000 years to make a full circle around the Sun. It would have a temperature of less than 200 degrees Celsius and a composition of icy gases and minerals that give it a reddish colour similar to Mars.
Most of the information about "Sedna" comes from hypotheses based on certain data, but there is not much certainty about them. Because of its small size, some astronomers consider it to be a dwarf planet, while others consider it to be a trans-Neptunian object, those bodies beyond Neptune that are not planets but are large enough to be of some scientific relevance.
The name "Sedna" comes from Eskimo mythology. She is a goddess who lives in the Arctic Ocean and protects all the animals that live there.
