Origami Day - My Actifit Report Card: November 11 2022
Today, 11 November, is International Origami Day. The aim is to pay tribute to this form of artistic expression that is becoming increasingly popular in much of the world.
Origami consists of making a successive series of folds and creases in paper in order to obtain a figure or shape, whether it be an object or an animal. It originated in China and mainly in Japan around the 1st and 2nd centuries and later moved to Muslim countries who adapted it to their culture. In Europe it began to be known in the 18th century through the merchants who traded with Asia along the Silk Road and especially in trade with Muslim countries. However, it is from the middle of the 20th century onwards that it has become popular throughout much of the world.
Origami should not be confused with origami, although they are similar. Origami starts with a square or rectangular piece of paper and uses nothing more than a person's skill to construct the figures without the help of anything else. It is very popular in Japan and there is a very spiritual mentality surrounding the making of the figures, as if it were something very ritualised. In fact, this art is passed down from father to son and is learned in specialised schools. Origami, on the other hand, is more free and often involves the use of scissors or glue. Origami is a modern, Western adaptation of an ancient Asian art.
