We often refer to athletes as the great protagonists of sporting feats, and in reality they are. But behind every sporting result, a medal, a feat or a record is the dedicated and tireless work of the coach and his technical staff.
Today we want to refer to the one who was selected as the best volleyball coach of the 20th century, worldwide.

THIS IS HIS STORY.

In the first city of Cuba, Baracoa, was born on February 22, 1935, the ¨ greatest ¨ coach of the world in the 20th century Eugenio George Laffita.
Although he started practicing volleyball in his hometown, his results began to be noticed once his family moved to Havana, capital of the country, and he and his brother Edgar were placed under the orders of Jacinto ¨Tito¨ del Cueto Fernández, who is considered the Father of Cuban volleyball.

His tenacity and perseverance in training led him to form part of the national team as an assistant attacker and he went on to participate in two Pan American Games (Mexico-1955 and Chicago-1959), a Central American and Caribbean Games (Jamaica-1962) and a World Championship (Paris-1956), among other events.

Contrary to what many people think, Eugenio did not start out as a coach of women's teams. On the contrary, in 1963 he began to coach the men's youth team. His leadership with this team was essential because three years later many of these players would be crowned at the historic Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in 1966.

Shortly thereafter, he was assigned the technical direction of the women's team, with which he would begin to write a page that would be very difficult to find anywhere in the world. From his leadership of the women's national team to the present, he formed the Cuban Volleyball School, in which the players have distinguished themselves for their attacking strength, excellent physical preparation and psychological fortitude. These characteristics have been key in numerous tournaments in which the team has been on the verge of failing to meet a proposed objective.

Eugenio George is an example among the sports coaches and trainers that our country has produced. Among the sports results and recognitions achieved are the following:

• Three consecutive Olympic titles (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000). In Athens 2004 he won the bronze medal.
• Three world titles (USSR 1978; Brazil 1994 and Japan 1998) and a silver medal in 1986.
• Seven Pan American Games titles (Cali, 1971; Mexico, 1975; San Juan, 1979; Caracas, 1983; Indianapolis, 1987; Havana, 1991; Mar del Plata 1995 and Rio de Janeiro, 2007) and two subtitles (Winnipeg, 1999 and Santo Domingo, 2003).
• Gold medals in three World Cups in Japan in 1981, 1989 and 1995.
• Gold in the 1993 and 2000 Grand Prix.
• Won all the Central American and Caribbean Games from 1970 to 1998 (eight in total).
• He is a member of the World Volleyball Hall of Fame.

In October 2009, the Eugenio George Award was created to honor the best women's coach of the year of the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation, another recognition for his masterful work.

In the year 2000, the great sporting moment of his life took place when he was selected as the Best Volleyball Coach of the 20th Century, worldwide.

Cuando se hable de la historia del voleibol mundial necesariamente habrá que acudir una y otra vez a este hombre que entregó toda su vida y sus fuerzas a la pasión de este deporte.

Muchas veces nos referimos a los deportistas, como los grandes protagonistas de las hazañas deportivas y en realidad lo son. Pero detrás de cada resultado deportivo, una medalla, una hazaña o un récord está el trabajo entregado y sin descanso del entrenador y su cuerpo técnico.
Hoy queremos hacer referencia al que fue seleccionado, como el Mejor entrenador de voleibol del siglo XX, a nivel mundial.

ESTA ES SU HISTORIA.
En la ciudad primada de Cuba, Baracoa nació el 22 de febrero de 1935, el ¨ más grande ¨ entrenador del mundo en el siglo XX Eugenio George Laffita.
Aunque comenzó a practicar el voleibol en su ciudad natal, sus resultados comienzan a notarse, una vez que su familia se muda para la Habana, capital del país y se pone, junto a su hermano Edgar bajo las órdenes de Jacinto ¨Tito¨ del Cueto Fernández, quien es considerado el Padre del voleibol cubano

Su tenacidad y constancia en los entrenamientos lo llevaron a formar parte del equipo nacional como atacador auxiliar y llegó a participar en dos Juegos Panamericanos (México-1955 y Chicago-1959), unos Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe (Jamaica-1962) y un Campeonato Mundial (París-1956), entre otros eventos.

Contrario a los que muchos piensan, Eugenio no comenzó como entrenador de planteles femenino. Por el contrario, en 1963 comienza a dirigir el equipo juvenil masculino. Su conducción con este equipo fue esencial porque tres años después muchos de esos jugadores se coronarían, en los históricos Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, de Puerto Rico 1966.
Poco tiempo después se le asigna la dirección técnica de la escuadra femenina, con la que comenzaría a escribir una página muy difícil de encontrar por equipo alguno en cualquier parte del mundo.

Desde su conducción del equipo nacional femenino hasta la actualidad conformó la Escuela Cubana de Voleibol, en la que las jugadoras se han distinguido por la fortaleza en el ataque, la excelente preparación física y la fortaleza psicológica. Estas características han sido claves, en numerosos torneos, en las que el equipo ha estado al borde de no cumplir un objetivo propuesto.

Eugenio George constituye un ejemplo dentro de los técnicos y entrenadores deportivos que ha dado nuestro país. Entre los resultados deportivos y reconocimientos alcanzados, están los siguientes:

•Tres títulos olímpicos de forma consecutiva (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 y Sidney 2000). En Atenas 2004 alcanzó la medalla de bronce.
•Tres títulos mundiales (URSS 1978; Brasil 1994 y Japón 1998.) y una medalla de Plata en 1986.
•Siete títulos en Juegos Panamericanos (Cali, 1971; México, 1975; San Juan, 1979; Caracas, 1983; Indianápolis, 1987; La Habana, 1991; Mar del Plata 1995 y Río de Janeiro, 2007) y dos subtítulos (Winnipeg, 1999 y Santo Domingo, 2003).
•Medallas de oro en tres Copas del Mundo de Japón en los años 1981, 1989 y 1995.
•Oro en los Grand Prix de 1993 y el 2000.
•Ganó todos los juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe desde 1970 hasta 1998 (ocho en total).
•Es miembro del Salón de la Fama del voleibol mundial.

En octubre de 2009 se creó la distinción Eugenio George, para condecorar al mejor entrenador femenino del año de la Confederación Norte, Centroamericana y del Caribe, otro reconocimiento por su magistral obra.

En el año 2000 se produce el gran momento deportivo de su vida al ser seleccionado como el Mejor Entrenador de Voleibol del Siglo XX, a nivel mundial.
