Ok, this illustration is partly practical and partly a very direct call, but let's first talk about the practical and why?

Let's see, as always this is all about getting out of my comfort zone, I don't find fun in always drawing the same thing over and over again without practicing something new, without facing my difficulties and without simply practicing until I learn, that's why I try to do things I don't know how to do well, or that I simply don't do often, it all started with a non profit search and ended in a "hmmm what would happen if I drew myself with this expression ?
and with that doubt, I used the following image as a guide.

the right one is my sketch

On the internet, you will find many base images that you can use to either learn, or just reverse engineer if you want to learn how to do the pose, either by doing it with geometric figures and understanding the why of each thing, but honestly it is better to do this kind of things with a photograph, because if you go by the anatomy that another artist drew you can make the same mistakes that artist made and never realize it.
I don't think I'm the best at drawing anatomy, but because it was a practice of facial expression, I was confident that I would know how to do the body properly, besides expressions here is also a test of perspective.

I did my own deconstruction of this character by making guide lines and trying to understand why things were where they were and what kind of figures to use to repeat them and then gain muscle memory.

I left the hand exactly the same , because 1 I don't consider that I am good enough to make hands YET, 2 it was part of the visual message, and 3 my focus is the expression of the face.

in my first outline, I imitated the same face, this to teach my hands what to do, then I gave myself the freedom to modify absolutely everything, from proportions, sizes, locations, and shapes.
and I succeeded, I managed to adapt a simplified expression into something more complex and recognizable.

It's really interesting to read about the way you practice and your reasoning behind it—I feel like it's a great guide for beginners like me.

I love drawing expressions; it's really fun for me. I never use guide lines, instead, I let my instinct guide my hand to draw things more or less as I see them.

However, I really like that, first, you use references... because I've sometimes come across people who demonize references, saying it's like "cheating," but I believe they actually help to understand and learn what you want to draw. Second, I really like your method of tracing to grasp the form and then drawing it yourself—it makes me want to try it.

Lastly, yes, I also felt called out by your message because I haven't practiced drawing today, haha.

I really love your art. ✨

thank you, all artists have their own way of learning,
when you gain muscle memory is due to drawing something over and over again,
you call it : lips, eyes, nose whatever really,
even body shapes,
this is why some artist draw one specific body type, one eye, cuz is what they repeated and they never went further,
what i belive is that is important to learn all,
to not avoid the things we dont know how to draw.

when kids, learning to write, what we do? we are not given a solid white paper and told "write something" when we dont know yet the ABC,
we first visualize,
then we trace it till we already learn and know how to write and on the go, we make our own free style in writing.

such is illustration.

i have been teaching myself and learning in my own way C:

glad you got inspired, keep practicing !

Well, the truth is that your drawing is much better than that reference without a doubt XD!
I loved the facial expression, it has too much personality. 🕶️

thanks, thats the whole point, reference is just that a reference, you take the base "idea" and you do your own stuff.

just to make my idea clear: this illustration goes to ppl who pretend being an artist but what they do is fake a process of an AI picture, im sick of it, and hell tired.

TAKE IT, take the damn pen and DRAW do an effort at least.

And ab the base YCH: on internet you will find references, bunch of YCH, that play around the whole idea of taking THE POSE and putting your character IN THAT POSE, DO NOT trace someone else art and make it look like your own if its practice, call it as it is, a practice...

YCH is for literally doing your OWN art style on that pose. wich is fine :)

you still have to do : line work, hair, proper body shape/size so yeah, you have to learn your shit :3

sooo.. TAKE IT >:D
practice learn RULE THE WORLD!
