Las últimas semanas han sido una larga consecución de sucesos, cansancio y recuperación, no he podido dedicarme como me gustaría a mis proyectos más bonitos, pero la vida es buena y tambien generosa en pequeños milagros y episodios de relleno graciosos como este: Me comprometí a tratar de reparar estas cosas, ¿me arrepiento?, un poquito, como siempre sucede con los proyectos que te propones a ciegas, sin un plan claro y por ende con su correspondiente dosis de incertidumbre.
The last few weeks have been a long succession of events, tiredness and recovery, I have not been able to dedicate myself as I would like to my most beautiful projects, but life is good and also generous in small miracles and funny filler episodes like this one: I committed myself to try to repair these things, do I regret it?, a little bit, as it always happens with the projects that you propose blindly, without a clear plan and therefore with its corresponding dose of uncertainty.
✦ The challenge of this repair is that these things open up as a kind of double paddle ✦

🗨 CONTEXT: A neighbor's son asked me if I could repair these, specifically make them a new synthetic leather lining.
✦ What things have you seen soldier? ✦
Hacer un nuevo forro de cuero sintético no es algo especialmente difícil, algunos son elásticos y supongo en este caso eso habría ayudado mucho a la "nueva piel" que estas cosas necesitan, pero la persona trajo un material diferente a la muestra que le di (por favor si un artista textil te da una muestra de lo que debes comprar para tu proyecto, no compres algo diferente, hay motivos específicos por las que te ha recomendado y dado una muestra de lo que necesita para ayudarte).
Making a new faux leather lining is not a particularly difficult thing to do, some are stretchy and I suppose in this case that would have really helped the "new skin" these things need, but the person brought a different material than the sample I gave them (please if a textile artist gives you a sample of what to buy for your project, don't buy something different, there are specific reasons why they have recommended and given you a sample of what they need to help you).

Y como en este blog somos curiosos y nos vamos por 10.000 ramas, fuimos a Amazon en busca de una referencia de cómo son estas cosas antes de su punto de expiración. ¡Son bonitos!, y tambien menos costosos de lo que creía.
And since we are curious and go for 10,000 branches in this blog, we went to Amazon looking for a reference of how these things are before their expiration point. They are nice, and also less expensive than I thought.

Pospuse por algunos días empezar este intento de reparación porque me preocupaba utilizar una puntada equivocada que terminara rasgando el material (esta cuerina sintética negra no estira en ninguna dirección).
I put off starting this repair attempt for a few days because I was worried about using the wrong stitch that would end up tearing the material (this black synthetic leather does not stretch in any direction).
✦ I even thought about using glue when installing the new material but I discarded the idea because it meant only one attempt to fit everything together and the range of error was large ✦
Mientras más lo pensaba caí en cuenta que lo mejor sería una costura normal recta, espaciada eso si para no debilitar el material, que tambien era un poco acolchado al tacto.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that a normal straight seam would be best, spaced out so as not to weaken the material, which was also a bit padded to the touch.
✦ I think I thought about it too much for fear of wasting material ✦
Para el nuevo forro de cada pieza, calqué su contorno más unos 3 cm aproximadamente extra sobre el nuevo material. Para la parte interna, parece muy difícil pero no lo es, solo fue algo confuso: Debes meter un rectángulo del material en esta "boca" con el lado exterior hacia afuera, pasa el marcador por el contorno más 3 cm extras. Así obtendrás la pieza que corresponde a esa parte tan peculiar de estas herramientas.
For the new lining of each piece, I traced its outline plus about 3 cm extra on the new material. For the inner part, it seems very difficult but it is not, it was just a little confusing: You have to put a rectangle of the material in this "mouth" with the outside facing out, pass the marker along the outline plus 3 cm extra. This way you will get the piece that corresponds to that very peculiar part of these tools.
✦ At this stage it is shaping up better but frankly half way through the process I thought this would be a failed project -nervous smile- ✦
El resto del proceso trata de tensar la cuerina sintética del lado que falta por cerrar. Las pinzas de costura son una gran ayuda y de verdad recomiendo que si aún no tienes, inviertas en un set pequeño, te aseguro que será una inversión A1.
The rest of the process is about tightening the synthetic leather on the side that remains to be closed. Sewing pliers are a great help and I really recommend that if you don't have them yet, invest in a small set, I assure you that it will be an A1 investment.
✦ Here I was very happy because I realized that it would work out well ✦
Para cerrar esta última parte utilice una aguja normal cargada doble con hilo regular, he hice una costura invisible con una distancia de 1 a 1.5 cm entre cada puntada (tirando del hilo se cierra como en una especie de corset en zigzag).
To close this last part I used a normal needle double loaded with regular thread, I made an invisible seam with a distance of 1 to 1.5 cm between each stitch (pulling the thread closes like a kind of zigzag corset).
✦ Although it seems very planned, the process was mostly intuitive ✦
La unión del lado contrario con máquina de coser debe quedar asi. Aunque de la parte cerrada a mano debe quedar un poquito más suelta, lamentablemente no le tome fotos porque ya las había enviado con su dueño.
The seam on the opposite side with the sewing machine should look like this. Although the part closed by hand should be a little looser, unfortunately I did not take pictures because I had already sent them to its owner.
✦ Ta Daaaa ~ ✦
🔷 RESULTADO 🔷 ¿Perfecto?, claro que no, los bordes de la parte superior tienen pequeñas intersecciones donde el material por no ser elástico, no quiso estirar ni adaptarse pese a que la curva de la costura fue bastante pronunciada. PERO el resultado es sólido y resistente asi que cumple con su función, que es alargar la vida de estos items de entrenamiento.
🔶 RESULT 🔶 Perfect?, of course not, the edges of the top have small intersections where the material for not being elastic, did not want to stretch or adapt despite the fact that the curve of the seam was quite pronounced. BUT the result is solid and resistant so it fulfills its function, which is to extend the life of these training items.
✦ Quite smooth and pleasant to the touch ✦
🔵 "¿RECOMIENDO RESTAURAR ESTE EQUIPO O COMPRAR UNO NUEVO?" 🔵 Comprar uno ronda los 20$, sin contar los costos de envío. El material que utilice para forrarlo tiene un costo de menos de 4$ el metro (por casi 3 metros de ancho), si lo sumas al costo de mano de obra, y si no te importa el aspecto de las fotos, creo que vale la pena restaurarlos, sobre todo porque la base sigue siendo sólida y por ende, funcional.
🟠 "DO I RECOMMEND RESTORING THIS EQUIPMENT OR BUYING A NEW ONE?" 🟠 Buying one is around $20, not counting shipping costs. The material I used to line it costs less than 4$ a meter (for almost 3 meters wide), if you add it to the labor cost, and if you don't mind the look of the photos, I think it's worth restoring them, especially since the base is still solid and therefore functional.
✦ Again, it is always nice, and when time permits, to help others to breathe new life into things ✦
Las restauraciones siempre representan un reto y estan lejos de ser mis proyectos favoritos, rara vez los registro porque son poco estéticos y toda mi concentración se va en "no lo dañes, ¡no lo dañeees!", pero en esta ocasión me parecio un proceso interesante 🙌 ¡Espero todos tengan un hermoso inicio de semana!, y un feliz final de Abril 🌻 💛 ✨
Restorations always represent a challenge and they are far from being my favorite projects, I rarely record them because they are unaesthetic and all my concentration goes into "don't damage it, don't damage it!", but this time I found it an interesting process 🙌 I hope you all have a beautiful start of the week, and a happy end of April 🌻 💛 ✨
