Crisp Sandwich for Lunch: October 18 2022
The Avenue between the playing fields mid-Autumn.
I'm not sure what happened this morning but breakfast was jettisoned, followed by lunch. It was a busy day with a national meeting about the cost of living crisis, followed by a London based one about, among other things, the Metropolitan Police Force.
Finally, free of the computer, I headed for the kitchen and the quickest thing I could find to make: a crisp sandwich. It was delicious with home made bread, proper butter and posh crisps from Marks & Spencer.
I took my cup of tea outside to see what the weather was like (mild and sunny) and bumped into my neighbour who was coming to take in her bin after the waste collection, still in her jim-jams. Well, she said, by way of explanation, I've been working. I could be wrong, but I think she does telesales.
We shared our respective views on the last 24 hours. "I can't stop watching the parliamentary channel," she confessed, "it's not doing me any good." The 'jamas started to make more sense. We agreed it was a shocking mess and we didn't like Jeremy Hunt - "didn't he mess up the NHS?" - but it could be worse and probably will be.
My tea finished, I went for my walk in the late afternoon, enjoying the low sunlight and long shadows and leaves on the Japanese maples looking like they were on fire.
My camera isn't powerful enough to catch it, you'll have to imagine it.
After another cup of tea and a sit-down and a flying visit from my ex-housemate, it was time to think about something to eat.
I went for some roast chicken with mashed potatoes and a lush gravy with sweetcorn thrown in. I'd run out of greens, apart from a lettuce, but that worked perfectly. Afterwards, some red grapes and a dark chocolate Florentine. Perfect.

How are you hanging in there with the cost of living stuff? I saw one post where someone posted their mother's electric or heating bill (both?), and they were on a set rate, and it had grown 10x! They had been paying something around 100 pounds but now it was over a thousand. I was floored, that's a whole rent payment! 😲
I sat listening to a shed load of statistics in the meeting yesterday about what's happening around the country: it is very worrying. I'm very fortunate that I happened to be in an energy contract before all this craziness started, but I don't know how many people are coping.
