Full moon is in the 15th. Tonight we have a waxing gibbous moon. But why?

Waxing is from Old English 'weaxen' which means 'to increase, or grow'. The root comes via old northern European languages.

Gibbous comes from Latin 'gibbus' which is 'a hump' and has been used in relation to the moon since the 1400's.

As is normal with English, we have a phrase with different root etymologies because it is, as has been said, not one language but three or four, in a trenchcoat which mugs other languages and rifles their pockets.
