My Actifit Report Card: April 16 2025

Got called out to troubleshoot a motor that had been replaced but never ran since the install. The setup included a Square D NEMA contactor, momentary pushbutton station, and a fused disconnect — all wired up, but no motor function.

What I found: At first glance, voltage looked good at the disconnect. The control circuit was complete, and the contactor would engage — but the motor still wouldn’t run.

What threw it off?
240V was present on the load side of the disconnect even when it was switched off. That should’ve been impossible.

After digging into it, I found that the control wiring was backfeeding voltage — likely due to a miswired auxiliary contact or improper coil return path. The system was sending line voltage back across the load side, making it seem like everything was powered, when it wasn’t.

Where it stands: I ran out of time by the end of the day but was able to track down the backfeed issue. I’ll be heading back to finalize rewiring, test the motor under load, and confirm full functionality.

More to come once it's wrapped up — but this one was a classic case of how control circuit miswiring can cause ghost voltage and lots of confusion.
