Chelsea News - All You Need to Know Ahead of Burnley Game Today

Prior to the October international break, Chelsea will travel to the north for a Premier League match against Burnley. Rick Glanvill, a club historian, and Paul Dutton, a club statistician, provide their predictions for our meeting with the recently promoted Claret. After winning the west London derby, Chelsea travels to our favourite place in the Premier League era hoping to win three points in consecutive games for the first time this season. Burnley, who has been promoted to the top division, will be encouraged by their lone victory thus far, which came on Tuesday at Luton Town. In continuous use as a sports ground since 1843, Saturday’s venue Turf Moor is one of the few in England that predates Stamford Bridge, where gates opened for athletics in 1877. Both clubs, the hosts currently 18th and the visitors 11th, have a rampant lion on their shirt badge, but only Chelsea’s king of beasts is looking over its shoulder.

Mauricio Pochettino will hope to extend our current momentum into the first of two remaining international breaks this year. All three recent victories against top-flight clubs across all competitions have been achieved with a clean sheet (3-0 v Luton, 1-0 v Brighton and 2-0 v Fulham). We now have the second-best defensive record in the top flight (six conceded, behind Manchester City’s five).

A deep dive into the Chelsea team news, who up until this point had the second-highest possession rate in the league, gave Brighton and Fulham the most of the ball but still prevailed easily. Only twice, in Monday's game, did the Blues' actual finishing surpass theoretical expectations, with the two successful goals only barely reaching an xG of 1.7. The money that Pochettino put into believing in his young players has begun to pay off. Levi Colwill, a promising left-back, made a lovely pass to Mykhailo Mudryk for his fine debut goal in the famed royal blue, while Cole Palmer, who has been eased into the starting lineup, is displaying excellent positioning and intelligence.

Armando Broja's persistent effort was rewarded with a goal in his first start following a protracted layoff due to a major knee injury.Midfield is also playing well. Conor Gallagher, who served as captain on Monday and is one of the best at turning with his back to goal, has taken on a more advanced pressing role, allowing Enzo Fernandez to make an impact from deeper while still running behind when possible.

Moises Caicedo keeps getting better, recovering the ball and releasing it fast to apply pressure to the opposition. It's encouraging to see Marc Cucurella manage more passing accuracy from his interim right-back position compared to last season, especially over longer distances, especially with Ben Chilwell out temporarily due to injury and Colwill flourishing at left-back. After getting hurt at Fulham, Mudryk, Caicedo, and Carney Chukwuemeka returned to training in the middle of the week under Pochettino's supervision. Malo Gusto must serve the final game of a three-game suspension while Nico Jackson gets reinstated. Reece James, who is recovering from an injury, is also have to serve a one-match punishment for objecting to the firing of his fellow right-back. After the break for international play, the two should be eligible for selection to face Arsenal.

Beginning in late January 2010, this particular Turf War in Premier League history can be found. Four months later, Carlo Ancelotti's team would be crowned champions after rebounding from a December of lost points, although it required a late header from captain John Terry to secure the full point total. Following a sweeping play, Nicolas Anelka scored his 12th goal of the year to give his team the lead. However, Stephen Fletcher eluded Alex to score the equaliser. On a Monday night in 2014, this was the first game of Jose Mourinho's third title-winning season. Debutants Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, and Cesc Fabregas all made an impact right away. Scott Arfield had scored against the grain of the game, but a three-goal burst over the course of 17 first-half minutes gave the fight its decisive knockout.

Diego Costa should have been given a penalty for diving early on, but the Spain striker finally got what he deserved when he scored the equaliser. After a mesmerising 23-touch Chelsea move, Fabregas' genuinely beautiful pass was duly delivered by Andre Schurrle, and Branislav Ivanovic then expertly guided the Catalan's corner in for the third goal. August 1973 marked the last time the Blues suffered a defeat at Turf Moor in the old First Division, and it was also the last time we failed to score against them in any match at that level.

In March 2022, when we last faced off at Turf Moor, Chelsea scored four goals for the third time in four trips. All of the goals were scored in the second half, with James scoring two minutes after the interval after using deft footwork. Before Christian Pulisic added the last goal, Kai Havertz already had two goals. Next Saturday marks the 45th anniversary of one of Chelsea's most memorable comeback victories. On October 14, 1978, at the Bridge, Bolton center-half Sam Allardyce scored an own goal with seconds left to give his team a surprise 4-3 victory after falling behind 3-0 at the break. Ken Shellito calling Clive Walker off the bench in the 71st minute served as the impetus for the Blues' comeback. The homegrown left winger outran the Trotters and assisted Tommy Langley in scoring the opening goal of the response before scoring the equalise with three minutes remaining. To the pleasure of the Shed End, Walker broke free once more in stoppage time and crossed in a perilous manner, forcing the confused Allardyce to find his own net.
