The Monday Sports Report #2

Hello, once again.

I'm here with a brief round up of the sports stories that caught my eye over the weekend.

Wimbledon

Men's Final

Well it wasn't really the final that anyone wanted, but with Rafael Nadal pulling out with an abdominal injury, I think, most tennis fans were happy enough to see if Nick Kyrgios, dubbed as the current bad boy of tennis by some, could topple one of the most prolific players of this era, Novak Djokovic. And, after the first set it seemed likely that an upset may be on the cards. If there is a lesson to be learned though, it's never count out the reigning champion, remember Djokovic was 2 sets down in the Q/F, and then a set down in the Semi against valiant Brit Cam Norrie.

The Final Score

So, Djokovic walks away with his 4th consecutive Championship Title, his 7th of the last 11 incidentally, and moves to within one win of Nadal's overall tally of Grand Slam victories with 21.

Formula 1

Austrian Grand Prix

Three different constuctors topped the podium after this race, the Ferrari of Charles LeClerc as the winner, Max Verstappen's Red Bull in second, and third was Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes. Leclerc, found himself having to overtake Verstappen three times during the course of the race as a result of pit-stops, but was clearly driving the better car on the day, as each move looked effortless. His team-mate however wasn't so happy with his car after it caught fire on lap 57, and he had to make a speedy exit from the cockpit, whilst it was rolling backwards at the side of the track. He emerged unscathed. Lewis Hamilton, starting from 9th on the grid, battled through, as only Lewis knows how to grab another 3rd place, his third in a row, earning him some vital championship points.

Golf

The Open

The world's greatest golfers are congregating at the world's greatest golf course to compete in the 150th Open Championship, the 30th time it's been held on The Old Course at St.Andrews, Scotland. The last time The Open was held here was 2015, won by Zach Johnson after a four hole playoff with 2 other players. Some of the big names trying to get their names on the famous claret jug, Tiger Woods (2-time winner), Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Mark Calcavecchia, Ernie Els, Zach Johnson, Colin Morikawa, Phil Mickleson - and that's just a few of the former champions. Scottie Scheffler, the current No.1 ranked player, and tied for eighth place last time at Royal St. Georges, is in the mix too. The quality of players is extensive and i could go on for days listing them, so i'll stop there. The bookies have Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Scottie Sheffler as the top 3 in the markets, with Tiger, unsurprisingly well down the list at around 80-1.
