Some wooden chess pieces
Hi chessfans,
as a Christmas gift for myself (and the chess playing part of my family) I had ordered some premium wooden chess pieces (actually a set with a board as well). It took quite a while but a few days ago finally it arrived!
Each piece was individually bubble wrapped.
After unwrapping the pieces it turned out the box has cutouts of different sizes in the foam which is covering the ground, so that each piece is firmly held, like here the spare Queens which are included in the set. Really nice.
The pieces are made from boxwood. The slow growth of Buxus sempervirens renders the wood very hard, heavy, and regular, making it ideal for the crafting of flutes and oboes, engraving, marquetry and - chess pieces.
They are hand-carved, hand-polished, have some weights inside and are allegedly FIDE approved for Championship use!
The board is made from ebony, walnut and maple wood.
Some details:
The mane of the horse is the most complicated structure to manually carve and takes most of the time.
While the white pieces have a layer of white felt at the bottom to smoothly glide over the board, the black pieces have - of course - a black one.
With this pieces we are ready for the big blackout, as playing over-the-board (otb) makes really fun now 😄!
I never had such classy chess pieces! This was a one-time investment for the rest of my live (and that of my inheritors)...

Da ist eine 2. Königin dabei? Hab ich bisher noch nie gesehen.
Letztens hab ich mal ein witziges Set gesehen: ein Asterix Schachspiel, da waren dann die Gallier auf der einen Seite gegen die Römer. Richtig mit Majestix und Caesar als Könige und all den anderen Figuren aus den Comics. Gibts nur noch gebraucht, und nicht grade billig.
Genau, weil sich Bauern, wenn sie auf die 8.Reihe kommen, in Damen verwandeln können (promoten), d.h. ab und zu, eher selten, können 3 Damen oder sogar 4 am Brett sein.
Schon klar, trotzdem hab ich das noch nie gesehen. Normalerweise kann man sich das ja auch so merken, weil das Spiel dann nur noch 2 oder 3 Züge dauert. :)
Sehr schick und edel! Ich habe ein Schachspiel aus Glas, allerdings eher einfach gehalten…

Oh man this set is going to last for ever, I do remember when I got a profesional and fancy board like this, it was like my level of play increased just by touching the pieces lol

:) very nice looking set. Are the queens the piece that gets lost most often?
Not really, but sometimes pawns get promoted to Queens while they are still on the board, so in this case a second Queen is needed.

Being able to have exquisite chess pieces looks good for decoration, but it's better if you can use it for playing chess with someone else.
