Hivechess Tournament S10 Round 3: We have a new winner - @samostically!

Dear chess fans,

the third round of S10 was a "slow" 7+0 arena (however with lots of berserking ongoing😁) with 34 players and an average rating of 1822. Welcome @levitant and @therealflaws to Hivechess! It is great to have every week new players joining in!

This time we finally had a completely new winner: @samostically. In his third season playing and after several top places he managed to finally land on the first rank! Congratulations! It was a hard fought race with the first position changing several times, but @samostically at the end had a lead of 2 points. Runner-up was @cocacolaron for whom it also was his best results so far (pls see his report about it here), followed by @vjap55. 4th was @deadleaf and our previous quadruple champion and favorite @sawko could only gain the 5th spot. Interestingly, also the other top ranked players @tungphong, @jaki01 and @eniolw could not land in top positions today. One reason might also be the strange and unequal pairing for which Lichess is famous for. E.g. the average rating of my opponents was higher that the one from the first placed, and I ended up as 18th. By the way, I think this was my worst result ever, so I quickly need to tick this off and move on to other tournaments.

The rules you can look up in the S10 announcement post.

No change on the top, but due to their good results, @cocacolaron and @samostically managed to climb up to the 3rd and 4th place, respectively.
After app. a third of the rounds played, everything is possible still.

Top gainer this week was @stranger27 - well done!

See you all next week - and keep practicing!

... the third round of S10 was a "slow" 7+0 arena (however with lots of berserking ongoing😁) ...

Even if I am a very bad berserker (with 0 inc in the end) I was simply forced to berserk as non-berserking would mean to be way too slow in a 7 + 0 mode.
It might sound paradoxical, but for slow players short time controls (with 1 or 2 seconds inc) are far better in Arena mode because then they are not forced to berserk.

I benefited from that LOL.... but think about it, you can easily beat many players easily with 3:30! So the pairing matters too. If you get u-2000 players 4 times in a row... that's 12 points already!

I even have blackouts against weaker players, so the points are never guaranteed, but if I can avoid blackouts I also beat strong ones ... just check my games and you will see ...

You beat me like a thief most times.... but at the end of the day, I'm more comfortable playing you than @tungphong or @eniolw!

I'm always praying to get to time pump lol.

I would do a special study on jaki's games....maybe a Hivechess documentary someday lol

Hive really does have everything it seems. I love chess, but I am a terrible player. Are there any books or websites you would recommend for someone who knows the basic rules and yet manages to lose nearly every game?

I taught my six year old nephew to play chess. First game he ever played, he won against me. I taught him to play!!! Everyone said how kind I was to let him win. As if! I would not insult a child's intelligence that way. I would only let a child win a game if they were on a serious losing streak and I sensed sadness and frustration and imminent tears! Anyhow, that's my level. I call it level zero.

Zero looks like a hug. 0 XOXO (see?) Also, in tennis, zero is luv, and love is beautiful. This is how I comfort myself about being such a shitty chess player. Sometimes, comfort is elusive.
