Hivechess Tournament S10 Round 1: @sawko is back!
Dear chess fans,
the first round of anniversary Season 10 started yesterday with a 5+1 Blitz arena - and it broke a few records. 34(!) players participated, seven of which were totally new to Hivechess: @cocacolaron, @perpz, @ibizaki (JasonRoig), @salomijale (summisimeon), @schnitte (Schnittlauchlogge), @alexmag1988 and @nftland1989 (CHeSsdieGOst) showed up for the very first time in the Hivechess arena - welcome! Not less than 19 players with a 2000+ rating, including 6 with a 2200+ rating are competing for the top ranks! We never had such a competitive field.
After quite a long time (back in S8) fourfold champion @sawko could end up as winner, in a relative close match. Runner-up was last season´s champion @tungphong (blackswan21) and the third place went to @jaki01, so the 3 tops spot were all gained by former champions. Congratulations!
Also 2 of the new players managed to land in the Top 10, @cocacolaron with an excellent 6th place, followed by @perzp. Congrats as well!
Of note, @rodrook had a good day as well (I had a pretty hard time to beat him😄), and took the lead in the category best performance in relation to own rating. Well done!
I was quite happy with my 11th place. I had a win rate of 70% with an opponents average of 2060 and my performance was 2260, it think this is a record, too. For the second time I am now >2100. Let´s see how long this streak holds.

Fatal blunders:
What should Black play here?
https://lichess.org/CeSC5ehK/white#81
In my last move as White against @jaki01 I had taken a pawn with Re4x, eliminating the defense of Black´s Rook on f3, the only way to defend my pinned Knight. So my Knight was safe for now, as that Rook would fall otherwise. But Black went greedy and moved the Rook to a3, trying to gobble up Queen side pawns. So I could end that game surprisingly quick with Re8 checkmate!
In this game between @sawko (White) and @tungphong White has just moved his Queen from h6 to h5! He had even a mate in 7 on the board with the Black king completely "naked" and cornered from White´s Queen and Rook.
But on h5 she was an easy grab for Black´s Queen who didn´t miss the opportunity! Probably the blunder of the day and it shows you that even the best player is not invincible :)

I am looking forward to the next weeks, to see who else might have a chance to succeed in this tough field. I heard that @eniolw was sick, so I hope he gets well and 100% fit very soon. One thing is clear: Missing a round will reduce the chances for the title to a great extent, which makes this an even more brutal battle over the next 9 rounds.
See you all next week - and keep practicing!
Great tournament @stayoutoftherz . I'm so excited as the season would be very tough.
I've uploaded my video and Analysis since morning but my 3speak encoding keeps failing. It should be up soon.
I wish @eniolw quick recovery.
I was about to call you out and ask if you're a part of this. I just got my answer when I saw your comment. You guys have fun with Chess 💞💞
Yes we do. Chess is fun. This season is going to be very tough. I love the competition. I could only finished 5th yesterday. I have a video uploading, you might learn a thing or two or better still you can enjoy our Nigerian music on the background. Have a nice day my friend! !PIZZA
I like that you said I can enjoy our music in the background. Congratulations on your positioning. I am sure you'll do better next time. Cheers.

Well, yes, fatal error (and nice checkmate), but in this position with also only about one minute (and after berserking no increment for me) left on the clock, situation was already completely hopeless, so that I actually don't consider this move to be my main mistake in this game, which I think was move 23, Ne2??, one of my typical blackouts in fast games.
rook a3 look more like a @rodrook error than a @jaki01 error :).
Lol, not really ... just check my other lost games in the tournament ... :)
We have more in common than you think (maybe it is age related anyhow).
Post like these are what keeps chess alive on hive, great one bro.
Very cool tournament 👍
I am dealing with some issues to upload the streaming, i hope it's available in a few minutes/hours
It was a lot of fun, I lost a few games due to some very novice mistakes in the opening but overall I had a good tournament, when is the next one this season?
Every Friday!
What a way to start this season, the tournament was amazing. New players and a very tough tournament. Excellent @stayoutoftherz
Hola, gran explicación de la primer ronda, me gustaría participar en la siguiente aunque mi nivel es muy inferior al demostrado en su primer ronda.
Quisiera unirme a su discord para no perder ningún detalle del evento. Éxito mi amigo
I don´t speak Spanish, but sure, just follow my blog - the next weeks round will be announced on Thursday. Just let me know your name on Lichess and feel free to participate.
I didn't even know this existed, I learned to play when I was three or four and I was really good for my age, slaughter my uncles to the point where they would get angry, although I don't think I'm good for my age anymore, I'm just too damn old...
I used to also play in school, because on Wednesdays, the chess club had to share the room with all the kids in detention, so I used to make sure to get in trouble Wednesdays, so I could play chess without letting the bullies know that I was secretly a nerd.
Doh! :P i hate when i just move too fast and lose my queen like that.
