UFC's Aljamain Sterling wants a pay rise: I don't think he deserves one
Sterling is one of my least favorite champions in all the time that I have been watching UFC. The teary-eyed way in which he won the belt in the first place, followed up by one of the most boring rematches that I have ever seen has made me kind of loathe the guy, especially since he started talking smack about how he silenced all of his doubters by defeating Petr Yan by decision.

I've always had a big problem with judges awarding undue points for "ground control" especially when the person doing the controlling doesn't actually damage their opponent or ever come close to a submission. Sterling is a master of this. He positions himself with a weak but locked in triangle and then proceeds to do almost nothing other than hold the guy there. He considers this his "style" and refers to himself as the "human backpack." It is wildly unentertaining for anyone that is watching it though.
When Sterling successfully defended his title at UFC 273, there were groans and boos from the crowd because he had failed to put on a show of dominance of anything other than lying on the ground and wasting time.

On the flip side of things, whenever Yan was in top position he went for the kill as I feel a fighter should do and during those instances Sterling was interested in one thing and one thing only: Getting Yan wrapped up again and riding the clock. At no point in time did Yan look as though he was even remotely in trouble and at some point he looked up at the ref with a gaze of "WTF dude? Are you going to stand us up if he doesn't try to do anything or what?"
Johny Hendricks was guilty of this and even though I had appreciated his style on his rise to the top, once he was there it seemed like he was trying to win on points using wrestling and ground control, rather than actually try to hurt his opponents.
So I don't like Sterling and I don't think anyone not related to him really does either. There might be some people out there that appreciate the technical aspects of his wrestling and how given that the rules are what they are, this is actually a very effective way of achieving victory. That may be true but it certainly isn't interesting to watch.

Just in case there are some people out there that don't roll their eyes enough when Sterling is in the picture, the champ is now refusing to sign any title defense contracts until a higher fee can be negotiated. I can understand anyone's desire to get more money, especially in an organization like UFC where their fighters are dramatically underpaid. I agree they should be paid more but when Sterling, one of the most boring fighters of all time in UFC, is trying to champion this cause especially when he is already overpaid, is just annoying.
He was paid $400,000 to lie on the ground for 25 minutes against Yan while boos resonated from the crowd in attendance and he wants to get paid dramatically more to make that happen again. Normally I would side with the fighters in these pay disputes, but with Sterling, he is paid much more than other fighters that put on a much better show. He is not entertaining and I think most people just want to see his fights not for the sake of seeing him fight, but because they hope that whoever he is up against is going to hurt him or at the least, make him actually fight a little bit.
You are the wrong person for this job Sterling. Almost no one looks forward to your name on a card and unless you can find a way to be entertaining, I hope the UFC refuses to budge on your already too high fight purse. No amount of human backpacking is going to change this.

The onky time I watch UFC is when I see my Nigerian brothers fighting...I rarely know anyone here

I've watched UFC games a few times but I was a bit horrified because you could say it's a bit harsh in my opinion but it's a very popular sport nowadays
Sounds like he needs to be knocked out and moved on. This will happen as fighters will understand his tactics and his strength will be his weakness.
as much as I don't like the guy's attitude or fight style I guess he is probably making a wise move to demand money while he still can. There are so few champions that stay that way for long so maybe he should whoa, take the money and run.

Having a strong striking background, I also prefer watching more kicks and punches. A lot of ground fighting, specially those who consume the whole round or more in the same position, gets me bored.
I haven't watched any UFC fight nowadays. UFC is the first MMA show that I did watched back in the day. I do watch MMA sometimes but mostly ONE Championship.
ONE Championship is more realistic for me as I am a small person and all of the person that I know fight in there. 🙂
