“ An Apple A Day!” 😇 My Actifit Report Card: October 10 2024

“ An Apple a Day!”…….☺️
“Hi Silvertop, how are you today?” 😊
I was hiking past Keith and Lynne’s garden ……they were busy Apple picking!
“Silvertop do you want an Apple they are super sweet….so delicious!”🤗
Before I could answer, Keith picked up a red Apple and headed my way!
“ I’m just headed to the first wooden bench by the open meadow, I’m looking for Bears! 🐻
“ Silvertop, I just put up my game cameras, did you see the BIG “Piles” they left by the Apple orchard?
We have some BIG Bears this year!”😳
For our secluded, sleepy little road, Fall can be exciting times!😇
Everyone knows the Cougars, and Bears are in the forest watching US, but now we get to watch them Lol!😊
“Let us know if you record any video of the Bears Keith!”
That’s when Lynne spoke up…………..
“Silvertop, I just had one run in front of my car on our road a couple of days ago!”
I reached for my Bear spray to make sure it was hanging on the side of my backpack……………..
NO Bear spray!🙄
Silvertop what are you thinking !😮
Guys, don’t try this at home Lol!😇
The ground under the Apple trees is loaded with easy Apple picking for the local Bears, and an equal amount hanging on the trees for everyone else!
It’s a bumper Apple crop this year!🤗
I took a bite of the Apple and watched, and waited……………
And waited………….
No Bears today!😮
I guess they are all hanging out on the edge of the forest with their smartphones taking pictures of these silly humans picking THEIR Apples Lol!😇🤣
“ Keith I’ll take one more Apple they are delicious!”
Till tomorrow Silvertop Mike 😊

Listen mister!- You were SUPPOSED to take it EASY and not do ANYTHING today! What happened to RESTING?

Some people just don't pay attention to the nurse's (me) instructions! Well, I guess that if you won't listen, you will have to feel, as my mom would say!
🤗💜😘😍

Apples! That's one thing I miss living here, locally-grown apples! We don't have bears, or mountain lions for that matter, either, which may be a good thing...lol! We do have lots of wild pigs, though, and man can some of them get big! Gorgeous photos, @silvertop! Enjoy those beautiful, juicy apples! 😁 🙏 💚

I’m sure those wild pigs can be very dangerous!😳
I wonder why you don’t see more apple trees on your island, i’m sure they would grow well!😇😊

Indeed, they certainly can, especially a momma pig with babies! Luckily they tend to run away when people approach, but cornering them, especially the big ones, is a very bad idea! The problem with apple trees, and many fruit trees from the temperate mainland, is that they need cold in winter, which we don't have. There are apples growing up on the higher mountains, but the fruit tends to be quite small. There are also a few low or no-chill varieties that are becoming known, but we don't have any yet. We have a few no-chill peach trees, but we haven't seen any fruit yet. Every place has its pros and cons, even here...lol! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Very interesting I had no idea that fruit trees needed cold winters!
I always knew that pine tree seeds needed to "stratify" as they call it, with a cold winter...

Yep, most temperate plants require cold to be able to go through their reproductive cycle successfully. Some even need it to survive. Yes, stratification is necessary for the seeds of many temperate plants to germinate. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

I have a yard full of the smaller variety of bamboo, it sends out runners everywhere !
You have to be careful it will overtake everything !🙄

Indeed it is, especially up close! Cool! At one point in my life I was planning on becoming a botanist specializing in the woody bamboos, and I grew hundreds of species and varieties for a while. It's most likely some species of Phyllostachys, Semiarundinaria, Pleioblastus, Sasaella, or Sasa. If you send some photos (of the culms, branches, and culms sheathes), I could likely identify it. Indeed, the temperate runners can form vast forests, groves, and thickets! I know them well! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

It was pretty amazing while I was in that world. My life took a radical shift, however. Bamboos are still like old friends to me. From your photos, while I can't determine the specific species, it is a member of the Phyllostachys genus, which are running bamboos from China. With how long the internodes are, and how narrow the nodes are, I at least know which species it isn't...lol! If you find any of the culm sheaths (they are connected to the culms when the shoot comes out of the ground, and they fall off once the culm hardens off sufficiently), take a photo of those, as for Phyllostachys that's the quickest and easiest way to identify the species. How does it do through the winters there? 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Very prolific Lol!☺️
Even in the winter, it stays green and lush!
During summer, it will put out runners 20 to 30 feet away or more!😳

Oh, indeed, Phyllostschys once they're established can cover very large areas quite quickly, forming huge groves. Even though the rhizomes can spead 30 feet in a growing season, they only produce shoots (which are edible raw, by the way) once per year in the spring, and they can't survive for long if the new shoots are harvested or cut. Just mowing around them can be very effective. Yes, all the Phyllostschys are evergreen, though some species tolerate cold better than other. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

I have found that mowing is the best option!😇
They spread like aspen trees in the Gunnison Forest in Colorado. The largest living organism.

Yep, I've seen mowing work very effectively for the larger runners like Phyllostschys. You could also harvest the shoots in spring when they come up, as many species have quite a good taste. Yep, there are a few organisms like that, that can go on for many thousands of years, covering vast areas. I find it fascinating. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Very much so! Yep, some of those aspen clones can cover not only acres, but even miles, likely sprouting from seeds at the end of the last ice age. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

When there is free food those bears tend to be a lot less shy! I bet many of them sneak out under the cover of darkness. I hope you get see a few from a safe distance....

Great mileage you got in there!

Probably within the cover of darkness the bears will come out to enjoy their apples!😀
I am sure it's better to view the Bears having dinner, from the safety of a game camera video Lol!😇
