I think that basketball is more popular in europe. At least in places like Lithuania, Serbia, Greece...Here in Lithuania this season so far all euroleague home games were with full arena sold out. That is 15,415(?) fans each game. Also you can check atmosfera of basketball games in Europe vs America:
