Amazing Diggers and a Nice Surprise: February 14 2022
This amazing digger was a little too close for comfort last week. Finally, serious work has re-started on the basement conversion in the house next door. Originally started by an individual developer from Darlington in 2006-7, who knocked on my door asking if he could plug his generator into one of my power points as he didn't have any electricity (oh, and by the way, did I have an outside tap he could use because he didn't have any water either). It ground to a halt after the 2008 crash, and later he put the whole development on the market after he developed diabetes. It's been slowly falling to pieces ever since.
Anyway, they start at eight and finish at six, and after removing all the debris that has accumulated and pumping out the basement, this enormous digger arrived to finish excavating the light well. It was slightly disconcerting to have sitting right on the boundary wall, and even more alarming when a tipper truck parked up next to it and they starting loading subsoil - both grabbers going at the same time!
But fair play to them, not a clod or broken brick fell into my garden. The digger is still there, sitting on a mound of earth, but they seem to have moved inside now. To be fair, it has been raining continuously since Sunday morning. We have a couple more storms on the way here, expected at the weekend.
In other news, I had a nice surprise yesterday: a previous employer (from 1987), wrote to tell me that I'm entitled to a pension and have been since 2015 and would I like to send them my account details so they could start paying me. Just sign fourteen forms in triplicate and return 😂. Still, always nice to get a windfall.

Hooray for the windfall! And yeah the drivers of those giant machines are often SO good with them - when I was in old apartment, the parking lot outside my balcony was their staging ground, and they came within inches of our building more than once, but never even scraped us. There are videos online of them doing tricks with them too, like turning on a phone with it or something absurd like that!

Hello there 😍,
Yeah, the machines look so clumsy, and I thought running both hoppers at the same time was asking for trouble, but instead, a beautiful pas de doble hahaha. I noticed the guy in the flat upstairs next door was also watching out his window - even bigger problems for him if they got it wrong and the rest of the house fell into the basement!
