Witch Hazel in the Botanic Garden. The little flowers always look like bursts of fire crackers to me.
I made it to the local group of Slimming World on Thursday, my first venture into the Dark Arts. There are a lot of groups locally, with a good spread of days and times - most people should be able to find something to suit their life, one way and another.
I had phoned the Consultant in advance, she was very enthusiastic, even with a noisy two year old in the background. Another woman was also starting and we had our induction, very comprehensively explained. There are lots of resources and we each received a welcome pack with the programme and workbooks.
I spent today going through all the paperwork, it takes a bit of time to get your head around it. Eventually I got to the point of realising it's broadly what I eat now, with more cheese and less milk and olive oil day to day. I'm not sure about eating that much cheese, but there is plenty of room to accommodate my extras 😎.
Back to the meeting - there were about twenty-five women altogether, most of whom had lost something that week. The topic was about socialising and eating out - how you can come up with healthier options and plan ahead.
The weigh-in was fascinating, everything is electronic and governed by your smart membership card. This also gives you access to the members area on the website with more resources (I haven't tried that yet).
I was inspired to get the pack of tofu out of the fridge and make a tofu scramble with vegetables and the last of the French fries from the co-op (these can also be accommodated in the daily menu). I'll use the rest in a chickpea curry tomorrow. I really enjoyed the meal, which is what I had hoped, as I had got a little disenchanted with cooking and eating.
There is also a whole section about moving - different types of physical activity but also just moving more in everyday life. There are little awards for reaching different stages, including getting going in the first place. I'm looking forward to telling them I get paid to walk 😁. I haven't read that section yet, it's tomorrow's homework.
I've signed up for twelve weeks, my last week will be 7 April, and I'm aiming to lose 5kg (11lbs). My main goal is to bring my cholesterol and blood pressure levels down, plus any other benefits of doing that.
The time works well, too - Thursday evening at 5.30pm. It's about a mile or so from where I live and as it gets warmer, I could take the back roads (the most direct route is straight along the main road) and walk there.
There was a police car with a speed gun out on my walk and soon after I'd passed them the sirens whirred into action and then a car in front of me was pulled over. Unlucky, the traffic flow was too slow for them to have been much above the speed limit.

Good luck with your 12 weeks. Treat yourself to one of the Pinch of Nom cook books or check out their website for inspiration. They had really tasty SW recipes. That enchalda lasagne I posted last week was from there. 💙
I did have a look, they do look tasty, and not too complicated to make. I need to get a few things in the freezer, either home-cooked or from the range in Iceland, for when I'm too tired or busy to think about cooking. That's often my downfall.
Yeah. Having meals ready to go in the freezer and things in the fridge to graze on and fruit are key I think. 😍

Thank you. Do you like gardening?
All the best with your 12-week program.
When you mentioned the police car 🚔 with a speed gun, I thought you were going to jokingly say they stopped you because you were walking too fast. 😆
Hahaha 😁! I didn't think of that 🙂.
It took me ages to work out why they were sitting in the drive of one of the University buildings, when I heard the sirens I realised it was so they could pull out easily. I did try and position myself in the line of their view-finder, though, all the time i was walking towards them 😂.

You have accomplished a lot already and I am sure you will manage to stay on track as many of the food changes seem to be already natural for you (besides the cheese… Strange I have never heard of diet concepts which incorporate a lot of cheese. Not sure if German cheese is different? Perhaps much more fat content?)
I am interested how the course/meeting will turn out and if it will support your goals.
We have tried to write down the meals in January to get a better overview what we are cooking and if we could be more inventive (yeah yeah, the data, the optimisation 🤣) Because I mostly cook when I am already so hungry that longer cooking is not possible or I will get such a bad mood… our recipes tend to be -ahem - simple. I am a hangry monster. By the way so cool that in English you have a this new word „hangry“, it describes me perfectly. Will cook now :-DDD
Hehe, the cheese was a bit of a surprise, and I hardly eat any, so little I've stopped buying it because it deteriorated faster than I could eat it. The programme advocates a portion a day, which I am trying this week. I'm wondering whether I could swap it for a portion of full-fat yoghurt, which I was eating pretty much everyday. I will ask 😊.
Other than the cheese, there is an obsession with not eating fats and oils - lots of fat-free items and others (avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, butter 😱) which have quite heavy controls. I've found it a bit of a challenge because I eat very little meat, but I'm sure I will gradually work out some good ideas. I can see that for many people, it is quite a useful tool without having to either know lots about nutrition or spend lots of time weighing and counting and recording. I respond well to routines, so having Thursday as "club day" will help 😍 Everyone is very nice, I enjoyed chatting 🙂
I get hangry, too, one of my ambitions is to start cooking (and eating) earlier in the day. I'm always much happier if I have my main meal in the middle of the day, rather than in the evening.
