Strolling Through History. My Actifit Report Card: April 2 2025

This afternoon, I took a walk with my two nephews through the old streets of Pasig. My nephew who's in the 5th grade had a school project about the time of the Spaniards here in the Philippines. The project is, take a photo of the things that are around during Spanish colonialism. And what would be the perfect example aside from the old colonial houses that are still standing despite being built hundred years ago? Being colonized by Spain for 300 years, old Spanish houses is not a new sight for every Filipino. However, the well-preserved architecture and the charm of it is still nice to see.

Walking through the narrow Burgos Street in Pasig, just on the side of the plaza is one thing I have not done despite living near Pasig for years..

Seeing the mixture of the new buildings and well-preserved architecture of the old charm of the houses makes you think about the memories that are stored on every corner of the place.

Gated old houses that are adorned with flowering plants..

More flowers on the side of the road and minus the noise of all the cars and jeepneys will make you think you travelled back in time..

We wandered past several ancestral homes, each one tells stories of the past through their wooden details, stone foundation and capiz windows. But what stood out the most was the Bahay na Tisa, the oldest existing house in Pasig. Built in the 1850s, it withstood time, wars and modern progress. It is a true piece of living history. I imagined the families who once lived there, their daily routines so different from ours of today.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the church just a 5 minute walk from the ancestral houses.

And soon after, it's time to head home.. quick photo with my nephew while making our way to the jeepney.
