I do not intend to question you deeply…But If your okay , can you tell me the circumstances?
Who are the "them" you were vigilance of?

Chapter15 is over!

About Japanese culture that appeared in this Chapter

  • Kappa

It is a continuation of the explanation of Kappa of the chapter14

Kappa is the most captivated Yokai(妖怪) in Japan, and has many stories and sightings about Kappa since ancient times.
There is a legend that pulls the soul from human ass and makes that person "Lethargy"
Kappa is a Yokai who loves pranks attacking people and horses in the river.

So are they evil?
It is never. They are like "innocent children" Kappas do a prank but do not take anyone's life.

Sometimes they also have legends that made humans lucky.
They are when pranks are caution of by humans, they tell people how to make secret medicines as proof of apology.

In order to help humans, they shut down the river water,
And hey sent fish for thanks when humans helped Kappa.
So sometimes they get along well with humans.

It is said that "Kappa is a fictitious existence" in the present age,
But I don't think so because there are too many stories about Kappa.

Kappa is probably like a "spirit"
Yokai are like spirits, monsters and friends

  • Japanese language

I started learning English from the beginning of 2018,
It has improved a little, but I always struggle in translation work…
And this chapter has doubled that hardship.

First japanese are difficult thing is that words change depending on the position, gender, age, situation, and era.

Japanese has "honorific" and "humble language"
And the words differ depending on the "samurai language" and "area"
There are many parts that even Japanese I can not understand…

For example about this page

Takebou saying "Oni-chan",
"Oni-chan" is used for men older than you or about 15 age young than you and also used as the "Family of first boy"
But it also depends on the area and gender.

In addition, "Chan" is usually used after a young woman's first name,
For example "Kawahime-chan"…
But that change on age and "you and me relationship"

And in old-fashioned Japan, couples do not say their names directly.

Actually, It is not really limited to just couples.
In old-fashioned Japan, thinking "the name is part of the body and soul"…
Because since it thinks that "words (names) have spirits in them", calling a name lightly will erode the person's spirits.
Therefore, only their parents can call the person's real name.

However, if I write about it in detail, the manga becomes so complicated that the reader can not enjoy, so the -Jingi- basically uses the real names of the -Jingi's characters-.

So I adopted the culture only for a part of it, and set Yoshie to call her husband "Anata"

Furthermore, what I wanted to express in manga was "the discipline(rules) among the family"

For example, Yoshie and Kawahime uses honorifics for Yasaemon on these pages

Obugyo gokurousamadeshita!
Yokuzo Okaerinasaimashita

Moushiwake arimasen

A samurai family has a discipline that "even close person should not forget discipline(rules)"

Samurai is a leader of people.
To become a leader, samurai must earn the trust and respect of people and become a "person's normative personality"

The children of the samurai family always talk with courtesy and loyalty even to their parents.

Women also have classiness and "beautiful words and qualities" and always "Humble" as a samurai wife.

And men(Samurai) always have the right heart, courtesy and discipline to protect their families and people,
And continue to be a tolerant and proud person to lead people.

The reason Japanese cherish greetings (that is, courtesy) is because the spirit of these Samurai is inherited.

However, I often draw omissions of courtesy in the manga to make it easier for readers to read…
And maybe, There are also of things that I am wrong with,
Because I learn them all in "self-study"

So I also learn the important spirit of Japanese while drawing this -Jingi-,
I'm glad if you are interested in Japanese culture and spirit while enjoying -Jingi-!

Thank you for reading!
Arigatou gozaimashita!

Takebou is so cute... he's not afraid of stranger too. Just a little boy with spirit and cute attitude. I like his chuuby face😊😊

Well.. I understand the difficulty you faced while trying to translate the words into english. I think you will do it better and better through constant practising. I wish I know japanese language to help you translate the story to make it more "easy" to read. But.. I have no problem to understand your story even though english is not my first language too.

I think I watched a cartoon movie with Kappa character in it long time ago and I thought it is something like froggyman or something. Myths started from reality too I think.

Thank you😉
Children's characters are a challenge for me…I would like to enjoy what to draw through him!

In the case of Japanese language, "I" and "you" and "it" is not often used…

And What further I worry is the word "あなた達"
This refers to "you" and many other people, but it is different from "You guys" and "there"…
And since there is a honorific in Japanese, readers can understand even if don't explain "their relationships"

Well…However I still want to draw manga in English, so I will continue my efforts😅

Yeah! I consider Kappa a "fact"!
Even if someone denies, I draw the of my believe kappa😊
